The design, colors, background, etc. should have an industrial feel. After all, this is an awesome gaming mouse pad, not your run of the mill piece of foam and cloth!
Have fun with it. Don't get too wrapped up in the whole "dream in code" literal. Think what kind of awesome design you'd want your grungy nasty hands to sit on all day as you code for hours on end!
