!!!UPDATE (August 5 2008)!!!:
Hey everyone who submitted, I really want to thank you from the bottom of my heart. I sincerely mean it. I know what it’s like to work as a creative and while 99Designs offers some unique and cool opportunities to hungry designers, it can also be frustrating.
I did not expect so many people to offer such great work (especially with a brief so limited) and I tried to be a good contest holder and offer as much feedback as I could to as many of you as I could. The reality is; 99Designs is NOT a cheap place for art, because it requires a LOT OF TIME to hold a contest here. I will be holding several more contests in the near future to help fulfill some projects we have in the pipeline which are a touch more complicated (but more money of course!) and I think just about everyone here should really consider submitting again!
However, with all of that being said, we did (and had to) choose a winner and I feel it is only fair to list the top choices in order:
1. penflare #50
2. neptune #152
3. (tied) creativebee #60 & LizG #6
Also, some entries were not chosen for this logo competition but the following artists are more than welcome to contact me privately to discuss other opportunities we have right away not contest related:
Ford Minton, maccustomart, and solfree.
Thank you again!
lol quad.. its getting pretty close there :) haha
There are a few that I think are too close to existing entities, unfortunately. I doubt intentionally.
evidently #149 thinks so too luden
@Luden: Yep, he is good.
Remember everyone, I am looking for a logo here. Not a splash page. I don't want people to waste their time designing an image that is weak by itself without a ton of background noise.
Again, think "will this work small?" I took several images and looked at them on my HTC Kaiser as a background image to see how well it will stand up when that thing does piss poor rendering of images. A good logo is still distinguishable.
Thanks and keep up the awesome, and TOTALLY unexpected great work!!!
Penflare, always coming with a very good designs.
Another quick comment to all submissions (and realistically to some designers who might be new or students):
When designing a logo identity of this type when considering the business card or polo shirt I mentioned, think to yourself; "Could this image play well as a 32pxx32px icon on the card? Or smaller and still be recognizable?"
Chances are the winning work could also be shrunk into a fav icon for browsers and bookmarking.
Wow, I'm really excited by what I have seen so far. The only thing I think I could suggest to any future submissions or current ones that feel this fits your design; try and think of how your logo would look on a business card or standing on it's own without the words Jenian, LLC. I obviously want the words there, but if you look at #6 and #12 I can quickly see an identity. Both are very different approaches but each offer a chance to build a brand off of an image that says something. Self-contained. That is really what I think I am looking for.
We've received the guaranteed prize money from the contest holder - thanks Ian.
Best of luck to everyone!
Well, Taylor, your design brings up a good point I should mention here. The company is not a boating company. I am really thinking more "sail-esque" if you were to include the boat theme. #4 is boat heavy and more than one color would be really preferred I think now that I am starting to see some entries here.
I understand that designers are world wide here, but this company and all people involved eat, breath, and live San Francisco. It's us. You have an endless amount of iconographic material to work with. The Golden Gate, the ocean, the bay, the city scape. I think a sailing related theme would be cool, but by no means is it mandatory. Give some different concepts a shot if you want.
I'm totally going to work with anyone who shows interest throughout this contest.
Wow. Cool submissions right away, Sean. I certainly prefer the #2 entry to #3. The font and offset LLC is nice. I wonder could we kind of marry the two? A techie looking boat? I like how design on #2 almost looks like a sail. If it was tweaked to look like an abstract boat, that would be sweet.
