london 2012, well, you should see what wolff olins has designed for wacom. www.wacom.com. Makes the olympic logo looking good again. but they get away with it...it's called branding.

And where does it end? the person who created the olympic games logo for Sydney 2000 must stand accused of using similar elements from the 1998 logo? (perhaps it was the same designer, is that then ok?)

I guess we all need to take inspiration from somewhere perhaps even subconsciously - you've only got to look at the London 2012 logo too see what happens when you run out of ideas - lol

I think this is a really interesting topic for discussion. I doubt we'd agree on everything about it though. When does taking inspiration from something become outright plagiarism? Is there a tipping point? How does a designer prove that similarities between his/her design and a copyrighted design are purely coincidental rather than theft?

Hi BombardierBob, I see the point you are trying to make but surely by taking that view then where on earth would you draw the line? - If this logo was for a children's charity or a global sporting event then perhaps yes, it would be wise to stay clear but most of the above logos are good interpretations of the actual contest holders brief which at the end of the day is for a local UK school and in no direct threat to any of the organizations, plus they are different enough to be logos in there own right.

Its a good base for discussion though, just because a certain logo uses a certain element, it can't surely rule that element out from ever being used again, trees, houses, stars etc etc. What is the view when using elements of the USA flag for instance in a design, it's not the designers original work but he/she is taking that and using it in a creative way to Americanize something and taking the credit for the design.???

i agree with BombardierBob, take a look at ziza's entry and compare it with the bottom left one on the link provided. I would say that is getting very close. It's made of the same elements in the same composition.

I don't want to bring down a designer but i'm curious what the general opinion is about something like this. Seeing the discussion it's not very clear and maybe even depends on the country you come from.

Well being from the UK then you should recall the Beetles vs Apple over the logo, then there is the fact that Safe Kids has several designs registered copyright and the simple Character design being an element of that trademark could be a costly fun for the designer that uses that
element in their design. Then this symbols are heavily used with Children's Hospitals too. Text and Font based logos are hard to go after but Registered Copyright ones will always win in court. Food for thought to truly think about!

    Goose - my point precisely!!

jhewitt22 - I didn't mean that entries for this contest run that risk. I was interested in what BombadierBob was writing and meant that if you compare enough logo designs for whatever purpose, you could find elements that may be construed as infringing. Then you'd be in the middle of a right old contest of Google-Fu!!! lol

mmm case for the prosecution is a bit on the lame side (sorry) Although just noted ALL the designs above have an 'a' in them which also appears in hundreds of copyrighted logos- OMG - lol

I don't really think that you are correct in your statement saying that using "any job requiring designs involving six pointed stars run the risk of infringing" - i don't agree- no one's design looks that similar to the Olympic Games logo that the word "infringing" needs to be used. Yes, some designs use a six pointed star, but not in the flame shape of people that the Olympics used it...sorry to disagree, but this time, I do. No hard feelings, I'm just making a statement, right?

Safe Kids Wyoming - see Save The Children

Wyoming Dept of Health - see the logo for the Summer Olympics 1992 in Barcelona. http://www.olympic.org/uk/games/pas…;OLGY=1992

Any job requiring designs involving six pointed stars runs the risk of infringing logos for the Winter Olympics e.g. Nagano 1998 - http://www.olympic.org/uk/games/pas…;OLGY=1998 or Salt Lake City 2002 - http://www.olympic.org/uk/games/pas…;OLGY=2002

How much comparison do you want to do?

Wow never noticed how many designs are rolling around this copyrighted logo for Safe Kids Worldwide http://safekidswyoming.org/Portals/…20Logo.jpg . I love this contest
but after awhile I feel I am designing more for a Children's Medical Center than an Academy and from
the looks of it so are others on here.

    Great contest so far!
