I think a new logo is needed....From a designers standpoint YES!
I understand wanting to tweak the design and keep the original for branding purposes-
but
as for not redeveloping the entire logo trying to keep from having to update
collateral and website info...
that seems to be the case...
the website should spawn from the logo not vice versa.
I have enjoyed this competition and you if you need help rebranding all your material let me know..

Sorry for the confusion. This is an overhaul, really not a total redesign. please see the sister sites and make sure that our logo still resembles these other sites (http://www.aurorabienesraices.com http://www.nicaraguarealestateleon.com)
I am open to changing the color scheme but we most likely have to keep some shade of red for the word Aurora. My preference for the word "Aurora"
is either capital "A" with lowercase "urora" or all lower case.
This will lead to a website overhaul. based on the new logo.
We would also like the resulting logo to work on another background other than white. This is the main problem we are having with our current logo.

you also say in your brief: "we are open to a new or slightly different color scheme as well", but then in your feedback you say you want to: "We are trying to stick with the blue and red, although we wand different hues."
you say you're open to a new color scheme, but then say you want to stick to the same colors, just different hues. Again, you're contradicting yourself. Please clarify.
aramterry, I'm confused about the colors. You say in your brief: "We have also found that the bright red and blue are hard to work with." but also say you'd like similar colors? Why would you want the same colors if they're hard to work with?
