I know we're taking forever to make a decision. I'm really sorry. It's just hard to get input from everyone on the team in a timely manner. Most of our staff is weighing in on this decision - about 20 people in all. I THOUGHT I had narrowed down the choices to about 7. Apparently people think differently that me(!). There are 17 versions under consideration; those rated 3 star and above. I HOPE by the end of this week (8/22/08) Shanda@txspc.com

ditto chrispackerstudio. When a week and 3 days goes by with no word what else are you going to think? 5 of the last 7 contests I've entered have not been back online in over a week. One of them 2 weeks. Glad to hear this isn't one.

    Shanda, thanks for the update.
I missed your e-mail contact address or I would have sent a message to you directly. Sorry for the confusion. I learned a lot about solar technology from you site. :)

There seems to be a growing number of contests that are not being followed up on. With 99designs being a fairly new service we designers are concerned about being left in the dark after spending considerable time working on fresh designs.

Very glad to see this contest is going on to completion.

    Thanks again for the update.
Best of luck on choosing a new logo.

    Chris Packer

Wow. The contest ended Thursday late. We were at an event all day Friday. We're an office - don't work over the weekend. Today is Monday. Sorry some of you feel neglected. Not my intent - just kind of the flow of your basic M-F, 9-5 world. The contest noted that we have 7 days to make a decision. I took that as direction - gave me a timeline to work in. I would like to share designs with many people who are in and out of the office at different times on different days. I want to assure you that we will absolutely award the (admittedly low) $150 prize. I love this idea, this site, and have told at least 162 people about it. I'm really sorry I wasn't as attentive as needed. Shanda
PS - I registered my email address. One designer wrote, successfully, to that address. I wonder why chrispackerstudio felt like you had to do research to find me? FYI, if you have questions, you can either write to the address listed, or to: shanda@txspc.com

Uh, there is quite a bit of outrage if you check the #10104 comments. The problem is that a lot of the CHs are going along giving stars and providing feedback throughout the contest. Then when time runs out, they disappear and no prize gets awarded, such as apparently this one has done, along with the others I mentioned. 5 of the last 7 or 8 I've entered have yet to announce a winner. What is to prevent a CH from posting a contest and then just walking away from it? Shame? Obviously some have none.

But then there are designers with no shame either, such as the one who just won a contest using the Illustrator "confetti" paintbrush...where the CH was seeking an "original logo."

lindajo Thank you for your responses. It seems 99designs is acting irresponsibly toward resolving these issues. I have not received a response in over four days. Maybe a blog could start to list the projects that have not been completed and get the word out on some of these clients and the lack of follow-up by 99 designs.

I wrote a letter to Texas Solar Power and asked for assistance. Any response I get will be posted here.

I would be very concerned in submitting a design for any project that has not been actively moderated by the contest holder and has not shown a history of completing a contest or two. I agree some sort of modification should be enacted for a contest holder to initiate a contest. Some money upfront would certainly reduce the amount of contests started but as they say money talks and bull#*#* walks.

I cannot believe the lack of followup by all the designers who worked hard on this project. Where is the outrage? Would any of these fine designers let a one on one interaction with a client go stale like this. Has the need for resolution and accountability gone out the window with the devaluation of our talents?

On another point you brought up regarding the brief vs the actual winning design.

It seems this form of "contest site" allows the clients to believe they have the skills necessary to choose a design that best suits their written description, corporate mission or business segment needs. What it left out (and most important) is the designers input on how a particular design meets the stated goals.

While I do believe this site allows many smaller businesses to now obtain a professional logo, I believe we shall see many companies that could have and should have paid the standard rates (tens of thousands)going for this low cost option.

We can't fight this direction, but accountability and transparency issues definitely need to be addressed.

also #10074 is on the verge of being unhealthy. Then there's #10104 who declared as "winner" a last minute entry to a "designer" who joined 99designs the same day he submitted an entry, and was awarded the prize above several 5 and 4 star contestants. His design had nothing to do with the brief, he obviously used clip art and it was arguably one of the worst designs in the contest. Needless to say the designers are, shall we say, disgruntled. unbelievable.

chrispackerstudio...thanks for checking on this. You might also check #10007, #9973, #9970. This is happening more frequently to the point where people should maybe not enter any contests under a certain amount. Or 99designs might want to make the minimum prize higher and require something up front to discourage this kind of activity. Maybe they're still on the up and up, but it's been a week and some kind of update should have been made by now. It's too bad because the idea of 99designs is really fantastic for both designers and CHs and I'd hate to see it ruined because of a few.

Sorry to all who worked hard on this project.
Here's to hoping the client has not met with any trouble and is still considering fulfilling their obligations.

Let's be sure to keep an eye on their website. Hopefully we won't see any logo activity that is similar to the designs presented.

I sent a message to the 99design team asking for advice to see if they recommend pulling our designs or any info regarding if they are attempting to contact the client. No response yet.

We need an update not a stop sign.

At a minimum 130 hours of creative work has been thrown at a $150.00
project. Are we being turned into bottom feeders? Is our work being devalued?

Please DON'T attach logo to website. Complicates the decision. We will consider tweaking website color to match chosen logo. Thanks!
