This is positively ridiculous. They are all starting to look the same!

upliftin, there is no way that the CH will have repeated designs if it's a "blind" contest. If that's the case, the CH have to comments on the first submission. If in the second, the design doesn't improve then the majority joining the contest are not "real" designers.

Evolving an idea is completely different from blatantly copying it. I agree, if you're going to improve someone else's idea, it's agreeable, though not always. Blatant copying on the other hand, is just not tolerable. And there's something else you're missing out, not all designers, look up on the web for inspiration everytime.

I have to disagree regarding blind contests. I agree about teh copying, however, to hold blind contests its just going to be more of an advantage to the designers, and not the contest holder. When we all design websites / logos, we all look on the web for ideas, and try to imporve on those ideas with our own, and hence we have evolution. This is how the web works. When we all see entries, we can see what the contest holder likes and does not like, which is a positive thing because then the contest holder will receive entries based on the good feedback. Making these blind will just waste more time on the CH getting repeat designs that they dont like. IMO of course. Its life - someone has an idea - but someone else will always improve on that idea. The CH will always get a better product this way.

i agree, since im sure 99designs is keeping tabs on this one i'll offer my two cents:

PROBLEM 1: this contest award amount is so high that it has prompted designers to simply rush out as many designs as possible in an attempt to make a piece of spaghetti stick. the contest holder gets tons of ideas, but not very many at all have any real creative time behind them.

solution: limit contest entries to a total of 1000 or even less. there is no reason that a good design should not come from the first 500-1000 entries! This will also encourage designers to submit EARLY, thereby reducing the number of copycats designs thrown in at the last minute.

Problem number 2: Font only logos. This is a problem because people are posting font only logos for fonts to which they dont own the rights to. This is especially true with high tech decorative fonts that are found on the web. This means that the contest holder is paying for a logo that has been designed by a font designer who technically owns the rights to their logo. Simply using a preexisting font as the basis for a logo is unethical and possibly even illegal unless you change it adequately or design the font yourself.

Solution: hard to say, but the contest holders should have some way of being informed as to wether the font was designer FOR them, or wether it is simply an existing font found on the web.

Problem number 3: Copying. its getting rediculous. no need for explanation here, becase we all know its happening in spades.

Solution: all contest of 500 and above should be blind contests. this is borderline not negotiable.
when amounts 500 and over are awarded, there is far too much at stake to risk someone winning on the back of a copycat design. If a client is getting too much of something they dont want to see, they have the forum to mention it to the artists. ie ("im getting too many globes, no globes")
There is no good reason why we all should be seeing each others work on large value contests. its just plain silly.

Wow, if you filter the original concepts out of all these entries, it would fit in a single page. :)

... or maybe, do not grade the entries and just pm the designers if the CH really like the designs. I think this could work without a trending of designs

Giving feedback on 1000+ entries is just not feasible, to be fair.

EVen with the explanation i do not understand the stars. 2 stars for an idea, Something you like. Take 5 hours to revise it and add cards still two stars? Sometimes a few words would be good. Good luck to everyone. No dollar sign makes up for running blind.

i seen many contests with MUCH lower prize that had much more concepts and good ideas it is supose to be the other way around. here we have 1400 submissions but it would be the same if we had 100 considering the ideas that are put into it.

too many submissions and very few original concepts. I see many designes coping my work just because i was first with four stars (let your imagination do the work FREE YOUR MIND Contest holder gave us wery good discription of what they want. Be imaginative maybe you will come up with better idea, it's a shame. Very good proposal for 99 designs to make blind contests. anyway good luck to all
