My question was completely ignored and unanswered...why? I see others have the same question. Is there anyway to get an answer on it please?

What happens if Gap should decide to use the winning logo? The winner still only gets $500 and featured in a newsletter? Surely we all see that this is not fair and that Gap ( a multi billion dollar company) would be getting there logo essentially for free. I have always stood up for 99 Designs in the whole "no spec work" argument that's going around. But this contest makes me nervous. It can potentially destroy the graphic design industry. If Gap gets their logo for only $500, think about what mom and pop shops will except their logo to be priced at...$10? This contest has the potential to completely devalue designers work, as if that's not a big enough issue already!

Not trying to be rude here, just bringing up some valid concerns I have. Any response would be greatly appreciated. thank you! :)

@Kim Hawkins - That's exactly right! Thanks for helping to point that out :) This is the reason the star ratings are the feedback being given for this contest. Ultimately we are just facilitating this contest and helping to ensure that people are sticking to the rules with their submissions. We are not deciding the ultimate winner, this is why there is no direct critique being given about individual designs. The star ratings are a guide to help highlight some of what we believe are the better designs.

@motive-a - There have been several people which have given an initial review for offensive, off brief and joking submissions. These have been eliminated or given one star. Today and tomorrow 3 further people from within 99designs will be reviewing designs and also giving their feedback.

Please remember, we are not ultimately deciding the winner. We are simply trying to give some sort of guide as to highlighting designs which show some great thinking and have real potential. This is in our opinion of course. Everybody involved in rating the designs is either a professional designer or is involved indirectly in that side of the business. the reason obviously for having various people reviewing the designs is that this way, there is a sanity check on each other persons rating and various opinions are taken into consideration.

@Bojansplash - Any comments which are offensive or abusive to other designers or to the contest holder will be removed. This has nothing whatsoever to do with egos. It has to do with being respectful to others in the community.

@Kim Hawkins - I believe motive-a just saying in general, and not just at this contest. There are many CH's that don't really do this. I've gotten feedback from CH's that just give a "This looks nice but not what I've looking for.." It would be great if CH's were better at giving a better critique. Maybe if its not what they're looking for, then explain a little more in detail what it is that's wrong with the current one. That way we have the chance for actually expanding from that.

motive-a, do you get this is for FUN? There is not a CH --99designs is the CH (NOT Marka Hansen, Gap North America president) The Gap Company spent the last two years rebranding and the backlash just may be a brilliant marketing scheme (one that instantly went viral).

Slighten up :-) --you've done great designs to show your clients who you CAN dialog with about their rebranding efforts. Use this (the gap mess) as an example of a misfire. And perhaps submit your book to Laird & Partners.
    ;-)

Well, I know it's just for fun, and it is fun... but then at the same time... I think that all of the commotion so far in this contest sparked some things that have been on my mind for a while now. Most designers are putting their time on the line. I know it's our choice as designers whether to take out our time and enter or not but if we do chose to enter then I've always felt, after entering 295 contests now, whether the judges are fluent designers or not, that the favor should be returned... At least in consideration and respect for the designers who deserve it because of the fact that 'pretty much' every CH has a wide variety of talented designers working for them for free. As designers, many of us do respect the code in respecting contest holders, their contests, other designers, and their requirements/rules/policies (which I understand) but for us, working mainly for free, we should at least be entitled to thorough feedback... our time for their time as free payment. Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge fan of 99designs and think that the whole idea was genius from the beginning. I'm just speaking my mind in the fact that I've always thought it could be a little more fair in that way. I know I'm going out on a limb here but look at this like a new suggestion for the 99designs "code of conduct" - "CH's must give all entries some form of feedback, whether through comments, star ratings, or eliminations.

lol motive-a, you are taking this way too seriously.
This is a community project and this space is reserved for announcements and exchange of opinions.
Everyone is entitled to its own opinion. You can agree or not but that is your right.

And... for "exceptional consideration and professionalism"... man, you have seen they gave 4 stars to copy of original GAP logo.
In-house designers as judges... pretty vague statement. Can they provide some credentials, name graphic design awards they won, exhibitions they participated in, famous logos they designed?
Sorry if I am not convinced in "exceptional consideration and professionalism" of people involved in judging this contest.
They did nothing to reassure me so far, quite the opposite.

I agree with you Motive-a. There has been no feedback at all! The CH must have anticipated that their brand will generate massive response.... and the rating seems to be sporadic...
    Not well handled at all.

...for us, professional designers (or experienced ones like me, that i didnt study this) LOGOS HAS A MEANING...
not only are letters floating over there announcing "hey! im gap!, look at me and buy my stuff!"

but maybe this time i can consider that the CH is reading no ones comment and is just looking for something visual

maybe thats why he has got some really bad feedbacks, lol

Look, I'm not trying to cause drama on the comment board. I was trying to give some constructive criticism to the people running the contest on behalf of the designers who really appreciate exceptional consideration and professionalism. I know I can't be the only one.
