Design brief

Organization name

VikingVets (Student Veterans Association)

Description of business

The Student Veterans Association of Portland State University exists to bring past and current members of the Armed Forces together to promote, unify and advocate for the veteran voice on and off campus. The group aims to educate the community about how the military has affected the lives of service members and to support those returning home from duty through the process of re-integration. The SVA stands ready to help student veterans achieve their education goals, providing information about veteran benefits and resources, and raising awareness when policies contradict the interests of our Nation’s heroes. The SVA provides the means for veterans’ concerns to be voiced in a safe and constructive manner and to bring awareness of these concerns to Portland State University and elected officials at various levels of Government. The SVA is about PEOPLE not politics (except when those politics deal directly with helping veterans and their families.)

Further requirements

We have already selected two finalists in this contest. We reopened the contest in order to get a few minor revisions from the two finalists prior to selecting a winner. WE ARE NOT ACCEPTING ANY NEW DESIGNS AT THIS TIME. THANK YOU.

This logo will become the trademark of our organization. We are a student group that is part of Portland State University, so the university logo (see uploaded file) will typically appear in proximity to our new logo. Therefore, the two logos need to compliment each other.

The most important criteria for a winning design: readily identifies our group, establishes a connection with our school, looks cool (in a regal, stately, dignified manner AND/OR hip & modern), conveys our military heritage & patriotism.

This logo will be incorporated into our letterhead and business cards. It will appear on our banner that hangs over our table at conventions and seminars. It will appear on t-shirts and hoodies that members wear on campus. We plan to make a lapel pin (approx 3/4" dia.) that members can wear on their suits at conventions. It will appear in print ads and posters, both B&W and color. It will appear on mugs, pens, buttons, stickers, etc. for marketing purposes. We'd like to have embroidered patches made for jackets. The colors and designs will also form the basis for a total redesign of our website this summer (and there is a good chance we will work with the winner to design that website if web design is something you also do).

We are looking for a modern version of a traditional crest or shield. We seek a crest or shield because they hearken back to the crests and flags that the lords carried at the heads of their armies centuries ago and therefore provide a link to our military heritage as veterans. We encourage using a shape other than a circle to differentiate our group from other student veteran organizations, most of which all have round emblems. Lapel pins can be made in any shape, so departing from a circle to a unique shape is no problem.

Our university's logo uses the following type fonts: Frutiger 45 Light, Frutiger 55 Roman, Frutiger 65 Bold, Adobe Garamond Pro Regular, Adobe Garamond Pro Semibold, or Adobe Garamond Pro Bold. Since our logo will be displayed in proximity to our school logo, our logo font style should compliment the fonts used in the school logo. Our university's logo uses the color Pantone 7496 (C:40 M:0 Y:100 K:38 / R:106, G:127, B:16). We want to use a rich, dark green for our logo, but it needs to look good when displayed in proximity to the school logo.

Because our new logo will be applied to a variety of products ranging from items as small as a 3/4" (2.5cm) lapel pin to something as large as a 3x6 foot (1x2 meter) banner, the production companies all require that we provide them with high-res .eps files because they are vector-based and can be scaled up or down without loss of resolution or pixelation. I assume that all designers are familiar with this file type and that you typically provide your final designs in this format.

We hope you will have fun with our design and we look forward to collaborating with you!
I will do my best to give each designer prompt, honest feedback and specific suggestions for revisions.

Images we have uploaded:
SDSU SVA Logo (Very sharp, eye catching & professional)
SVOA Logo (Student Veterans of America) - (Looks nice and professional)
Our current logo (which we don't like)
Examples of logo designs we really like and what we specifically like about them
PSU Cloverleaf Logo (our logo must look good displayed alongside this logo)

Thanks for your interest!
