The rules need more stronger.
Well I'm not complaining this contest got cancelled. Some WINNER! got one of designs removed claiming i used an un-licenced font.
and on the CH.. if it's his or hers competition then he or she has the right to cancel if a design is not suitable, then that's there decision!
E.O.D
I knew when I saw the $500 prize something was fishy. But of course, it's too tempting to pass up. Cinebarre, thanks for the invite - I'm so glad I could help bring you some free ideas.
@Lancelot - why are you defending the CH? Have some respect for yourself and your fellow designers. Is our hard work worth nothing?
I know this sucks, but lets please leave the comments out of the thread. If you guys want to debate cancelled contests and when things like this happen, please do so in the Forum rather than the contests.
that's no problem. Simply> open own gmail acc, and send every layered work you make to that account in archive. E-mail is a document ;) by date, by IP, ;) .... also in every .ai, .psd file is stored date of creation, name of PC, history, etc. I use this simple way ;) better than nothing ;)
I didn't enter this one.. by the time I saw it and was able to get around there were so many other great entries.. I do wonder though as I'm very new here how often do clients just cancel I mean with all the designs and very few put sample across the logo how do we know they don't just take it for themselves and use it anyway and skip out on the fees, and if someone did do that how could we prove it was our own?
Tropican Drew,
"Quite untrue when you've already been burned. One contest holder, not this one, burned me, so he can rot in Hell for all I care."
Even more so my point. When you have been "burned" which we weren't. You should be more willing to turn the other cheek, otherwise you look vengeful and less business like.
Every contest on this site has the ability to be closed without choosing a winner. It has happened hundreds of times, most unlike cinebarre who had the decency to tell us he didn't choose a logo. Most are just abandoned if no decision is made. Then you have a right to be angry because your work was for nothing. This contest allowed us to work toward a goal. Unfortunately the goal wasn't met now you are left with a design you can use to show your body of work. Cinebarre did exactly what the rules allowed him to do and he has done nothing wrong.
Too bad thiss one closed. Oh well, at least I have sometihng else to add to my portfolio, I was sure that Nightdiver was going to win too. ;-)
P.S. "plagiarism" is the UNAUTHORIZED use of someone else work.
Buying royalty-free vector art with an extended license option is called purchasing someone else work !!!
ferdongraffix.com creating that art and has sold it to seven different people ONE being me and one of them being San Jose Demons ...derrr...
Gee would love to criticize your work but you don't even have a website
Hey Tropicandrew
I will assume you are new to running a design business or you would know that Freelance Designers primary have clients that are more concern with BUDGET anything else (if they weren't they would have gone with an agency) . If the client wants to pay the extra premium for original art by all means I create original pieces.
As far as that particular CASE STUDY ...Taking a client suggested photo, putting a poster effect on it, cleaning up all unuseable lines , then "live tracing" (it's not called "traceovers") , smoothing the vectors lines once again, creating a new face and hands was harder than any original piece I ever created. I'm very proud of that logo!!
To Cinebarre I was advocating the many many rounds of revisions it takes to get a logo...not a live trace function of CS2...Thanks for getting us off point
Also, I don't know why a designer would advocate or exhibit traceovers (and *plagiarism) in their "Design Process". Here's a page on the design process that professional identity designers go through:

(EDIT) * http://www.artinibar.com/assets_d/2…Devils.jpg in your "Logos 101" section is the San Francisco/San Jose Demons logo http://www.ssur.org/research/XFLLog…ons_CL.jpg

Lancelot,
"Many of us are preaching that he needs to learn how the design process works yet we need to learn one of the most important rules in business. Never Burn A Bridge."
Quite untrue when you've already been burned. One contest holder, not this one, burned me, so he can rot in Hell for all I care.
BUT...on your other points I agree. It's within his rights to cancel the contest, though it would've been nice if he'd preceded it with one of those "If no logo is suitable we have a right not not declare a winner..." blahdeeblah.
Despite, I'm sorry I missed my op to show him what I've got (I really wanted "in" on this one), but hey, that's what portfolios are for. ;D
I'm sure they'll make a decision - when you want to totally change the whole workup of you business it might take a few days to look at all the ideas your like and find "comfort" with them. After all, this is only the first small bit of money in the direction of probably $1000s to come.
"Why, it would be business for one of us. That is all that would happen if a winner was declared."
Isn't that why we have these forums? So we can work with clients on a design. It doesn't help them get what they want when almost every entry gets positive feedback. There was almost no constructive critisism given to any of us. I'm sure most of us were under the impression that our design was being considered as a "finalist". I submitted two concepts, and was under the impression (from the positive comments and numerous exlimation points) that they were very impressed with my second concept... apparently not, hey? Good luck to Cinebarre, I hope they find someone who can give them what they're looking for. That would be really NICE!!!!!!!!!
"Sorry, but that would be even more disgusting."
Why, it would be business for one of us. That is all that would happen if a winner was declared.
