Star ratings aren’t necessarily an evaluation of your design skill — most of the time, contest holders use them as a way of ranking designs relative to their own preferences. A low rating doesn’t mean you’re a bad designer, it just means your submission isn’t quite what the contest holder’s looking for.

Talking with the contest holder in the comments can help you understand what they’re after, and hopefully improve the rating of your subsequent entries.
