When can I use stock images or clipart in my designs?

If you are going to use a stock image in a design that is NOT for a logo contest YOU MUST:

  • DECLARE ALL stock images used at the time the design is submitted.
  • CHECK THE LICENSE and be absolutely certain the stock image can be legally used how the contest holder intends. For example - there is often restrictions against using stock images for commercial purposes.

In general we recommend NOT using stock images or clip art in the designs you submit at 99designs. Please be VERY familiar with the rules around stock images - failure to follow the rules WILL result in your 99designs account will be suspended or possibly closed forever.

*Keep in mind that contest holders aren’t going to be happy if they are legally pursued over copyright issues arising from your work — and you’ll be liable for any costs and damages they incur!

We also strongly recommend that you read iStockphoto’s top five license faux pas.

Most licenses for such images are non-transferable (meaning you can’t just give the license to the contest holder), and don’t let you use the image in a design which is to be trademarked (such as a logo).

If you don’t declare the licensed content you’ve used, you’re liable for any damages incurred by the contest holder (as explained in our Intellectual Property Transfer Agreement). So please — play by the rules.
