What should I ask the winning designer to provide?

If you’re running a logo design contest, you should ask for a vectorized image in either file format (you may need to download a special program to view these files):

  • an EPS file (which is a universal file format that can be used with any image editing software)

  • or an Adobe Illustrator AI file

You can also always request a JPEG, GIF, or PNG file in addition, but these files are not necessary.

For website designs, you should ask for a layered image in either:

  • A Photoshop PSD file
  • or an EPS file

These are the source files of the design, and you’ll need them if you want to be able to easily tweak something.

With Print Design Contests, it’s always a good idea to ask your printer exactly the file formats they will need. But typically, you will want to ask for a 300 dpi (dots per inch) CMYK image in:

  • an EPS (which is a universal file format that can be used with any image editing software)

  • or an Adobe Illustrator AI format.

You shouldn’t ask the designers to provide any of the fonts used in the design, as many of them are owned by type foundries and carry hefty licence fees.——
