A wireframe is a sketch of a web site without it’s look and feel. It gives the designer an idea of what pieces you want in a web site so they can include them in their design.

For example, if your web site needs a horizontal navigation bar along the top of the browser window, or a box with a YouTube video in the bottom-left corner, this should be clearly indicated in the wireframe.
