How do I write a good design brief?

A good design brief gives designers everything they need to produce a quality design for you.

At 99designs, we make the briefing process easy with our online brief. This video shows how.

Also, check out this example of a design brief, which was completed using our online tools.

As you can see, it's important to spend some time thinking about what you want to get out of the design process, and what kind of design you want. The more detail you put into your brief, the better the designs will be.

A good design brief includes information about:

  • your brand and business
  • your target audience
  • your industry and competitors
  • values, feelings and messages you want the design to communicate
  • goals you want the design to achieve
  • colors you do and don’t like
  • specific ideas and imagery you like, as a general direction or theme
  • examples of other designs you do and don’t like
  • what you need to receive from the designer.

Our online brief guides you to provide all the details designers will need in order to create designs you love. And you set the timeframes and cost up-front, as part of the process of launching your design contest.
