How did you get started in design?
When I was young, I used to draw on wallpaper and everything I could get my hands on, so today I know that this is the job I was meant to do.
I have been involved in design work for about 10 years now and I can say it makes me truly happy and content.
Describe your design style.
My style could be described as vintage/retro but to be honest I gravitate toward all styles as each has its own charm.
Different styles are important for future projects and help with producing the highest design quality. If you want to improve your own array of styles, then it’s important to experiment.
What led you to start using 99designs?
I started working on 99designs because it seemed like a great way to gain new work experience, experiment with new styles, boost my creativity and last but not least, earn money.
I have been freelancing on 99designs for about a year and a half and I think I’ve done quite well so far. I’ve met some excellent designers with whom I keep in touch and exchange experiences.
What do you think is the most important part of the design process?
I don’t think I can single out only one, since each part of the process is important in its own way.
The initial design brief is essential to start the project in the right direction. It’s also vital to have clear and effective communication with the client. And last, but not least, I must not forget the finishing touches.
The best part for me is the moment I realize I’ve accomplished exactly what the client wanted. When I am certain they are going to approve of my design before I show it to them. I have to say, it has happened more than once.
In your opinion, what are the key differences that separate great design from poor or mediocre design?
I think the major difference is the degree to which a designer devotes oneself and ultimately how much a person loves doing what he/she does.
The more you work, the better you become and the quality of your designs will set you apart from the others.
I also believe that presentation can play a huge role. You need a good eye for what will make the client’s “jaw drop” when they see it. Presentation will definitely sell the design.
How would you sum up graphic design in one sentence?
Apart from being the best job I could imagine, design is something that allows my creative forces to flow while enjoying every moment of it.
Do you factor emotional or psychological response into your work?
It depends on the particular project I am working on. If a project transmits human values and emotions, I would want my work to make people stop and feel something distinctive and genuine. For me, that is a job well done.
What is a hobby that you enjoy doing outside of design?
I’m just a regular guy who does regular things like the rest of us. I am into sports and football is my favorite — I like to play whenever I get the chance.
I think of design as both work and a hobby, to such an extent that sometimes that is what I do all day. On the weekends, I try to relax as much as I can and hang out with friends and family.
