How did you get started in design?
I really liked action heroes when I was child and I couldn’t resist drawing their cool outfits and gestures. Action heros were the start of my visual design journey.
After I graduated from high school, I went to the Faculty of Art and Design at ITB. I received a Bachelors of Fine Arts with a concentration in Graphic Art.
I have passion for fine art, but I always love computer design. So, when it came to my final college assignment, I collaborate hand drawing and digital design. There was a doubt when I graduate whether I would take the professional path of art and design. I took the design one and landed a job at Ogilvy, an advertising agency.
How do you get your design inspiration?
My inspiration comes from the universe. The limit is the undiscovered one. :) Everything inspires me from the melody of music to the bittersweet taste of local coffee to the road view from my house on a cozy morning.
First of all, I need to know what the client wants by reading the brief thoroughly and learning the materials provided. After I have a grasp on what the client wants… I look for inspiration. Sometimes I just sit in front of my laptop or do something else until the idea come… after I know what I am going to create, I fire up my CS5!
What led you to start using 99designs?
I found a blog post about online design freelancing. There was a list of design crowdsourcing sites, of course 99designs was one of them. I tried a few sites and only 99designs made me comfortable. The system and competitive process of 99designs is fair to both designers and contest holders.
There are so many interesting contests at 99designs. Therefore, I design more often and intensely which has made my design skills improve. Yes, learning by doing… and getting paid :)
After I got my first win, I became addicted. Clients contacted me for more work which has led to more experiences and learning…
What are three things designers can do to have success at 99designs?
After realizing the possibilities at 99designs, I started to manage things…
1. Choose contests that fit your style regardless of the price. When you win a contest you also gain pride. Think pride first then prize…
2. Focus on the contests you have entered. What I mean is, submit your best designs and keep track of the contests. If you get feedback, then make the changes and submit the updated design as soon as possible. If you get no feedback, then always check the contest for any progress. Look to see if your design is rated and make the appropriate improvements.
3. Priority. If you think online design crowdsourcing has prospects then prioritize it. Spend more time with it and be consistent.
What do you love most about being a designer?
My feelings are similar to a scientist who has his work published for the sake of mankind. As a designer, when my work is appreciated and used for a purpose, I feel pride.
Being a 99designer means you’re in a worldwide design industry and your work is published worldwide too! You produce something and it’s used by other people… globally.
I’m rewarded when my designs are appreciated by other people I’ve never meet. The harmony of nature works in mysterious ways. :)
