The industries of music and art are often intertwined and music is, in fact, how designer Fahmi Fadly (aka Simolio) got his foot in the door of graphic design. Fahmi played in a punk rock band throughout high school and designed the logo for his group, as well as their print distributions.
Since then, Fahmi has extended his experiences to the clothing and print industries — creating graphic work for apparel and magazines. With a lot of dedication, Fahmi’s talents have allowed him to live a comfortable life as a freelance designer and support his family. One of his favorite things about his career is having the schedule to spend quality time with his wife, Meadow (also a 99designer) and young son.

How did you get started in design?
Music actually introduced me to the design world, especially underground music like punk, grindcore, death metal and whatsoever. I used to have a Punk band when I was at Junior High School and I was the one who was responsible for making the logo, sticker and brochure designs. My first logo and cover album projects were in 1995 for a Death Metal band with a weird name. It was a great experience.
Since that, I’ve had a lot of projects with clothing industries, local magazines, etc. After I graduated from high school, I went to college to major in graphic design. During this time, I had a side job as a graphic designer in a local clothing company.
Where do you get your inspiration? What is your design process?
Sorry if this is not polite but I actually get a lot of inspiration when I am in the bathroom :) Then I turn my inspirations into a paper sketch, scan it and turn it into vectors.
What led you to start using 99designs? Can you describe your experiences on the site?
My good friends introduced me to 99designs when we worked together at a clothing store, and I luckily won my first contest. Since then I’ve been interest in entering other contests, not because of the prize, but to try another style in graphic design.
I am at 99designs to help increase my design skills — winning the prize is a bonus.
What do you love most about being a designer?
The best part of being a freelance designer is that I don’t have to pay corrupted government tax. I also have a lot more time to share with my wife and my boy.
What has been your favorite past project and why?
There’s too many to name but from the last contest my favorite are:
The Monster Make-up kits Logo contest because it reminds me of my old design style and because I won it :) And the Genesis Digital ink Logo contest because I never thought I would win a contest with that kind of style.
How do you see the field of graphic design changing in the next few years?
This question is really hard to answer. I think we should leave the answers to Nostradamus or Harold Camping.
