Originally from Malaysia, Stephanie Lok moved to Australia as a teenager. Since then, Stephanie has happily called Melbourne her creative home – a place where design inspiration and talented individuals are plentiful and creative opportunities are easily found. Last year, Stephanie completed her degree in Design at RMIT. Currently, she works as a freelance designer, seeking out great opportunities to work with new clients and continue building her portfolio!

How did you get started in design?

Art was always my favorite subject in school, so it was natural for me to take an interest in Design. A teacher of mine introduced me to Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator back in yr.11, and since then I have never stopped designing.

What led you to start using 99designs.com? What has your experience been like?

I started using 99designs because I wanted to start freelancing and I thought the best way to start building my clientele would be to enter design competitions. 99designs has helped me build steady client relationships and has also helped me build a respectable Folio of client work.

Describe your design style.

I would describe my design style as: quirky, street and Japanese pop culture influenced.

What do you think is the most important part of the design process? What is your favorite part of the process?

I believe communication with your clients is the most important part in the design process and is the key to success in any business. My favorite part however is coming up with the concepts!

How do you take in feedback from the CH’s on your designs? We understand that feedback can sometimes be negative. Do you have any words of encouragement for new designers who may receive negative feedback?

Any feedback is good feedback. When receiving negative feedback try considering what the client is looking for and why your design is not fulfilling the brief. If the client is not clear on what he/she wants, it might be good to ask more questions.

What is a hobby that you enjoy doing outside of graphic design?

Photography! I enjoy collecting all kinds of cameras and taking photos.

Based in San Francisco, Allison (Alli) Stuart works as Community Content Coordinator at 99designs. When she's not writing blogs and communicating with designers, she is working on her Children's Book. She also enjoys extreme sports, like sky diving and traveling to new places. Alli has a Fine Arts Degree with a concentration in Graphic Design from Louisiana State University, her home. Geaux Tigers!
