Just to be extra clear – We will use a random number generator to select the winner. We will then check the winner to ensure no fraud has taken place and then that person will receive the prize. In the unlikely event a fraud did occur – we will then use the random number generator to select a new winner.

Would it be possible for the designer to be given the generated number? That way we know the contest is genuine.
We will use a program to both assign every contest win (and the designer associated with it) a random number and then ultimately select one of the numbers randomly.
I am not sure adding a step of emailing people their random numbers adds any legitimacy to this exercise.

Already 2 wins in March. I think, 99Designs should build a new page where eligible designers will be displayed with nos of wins. So that we can track how many entries are there.

I think the participation chances to win the big prize should be assigned based on the type of contest. I believe winning a banner contest is pretty different from a full website design.

This reward doesn’t have anything with your skils, it’s all about luck.
BTW I’m participating only web design contests.
I think a solution could be having 1 ticket for each 200$ of prize money.
(200$ prize or less, 1 ticket)
(600$ prize, 3 tickets)
and so on…

I think it’s unfair, it will be an advantage to those website designers because there prize money usually 3 to 4 folds or even higher than to those designers who do logo, banner etc.
Unfortunately, they don’t need your idea!

like where do I retrieve a random number that?
At the end of the month we will generate a list of everyone who won a contest. We will then use a program assign each a random number and then select one of those numbers at random.

Jason, what if a contest ends in March but a CH waits 1-2 weeks to declare a winner and it ends up being the first week or so in April? (even though the contest was in March) Do those wins count?
No – you must be awarded in March for it to count. There has to be a cutoff in order to keep this contest manageable.

I think it should have been based on the contest type. Coz generally web designers cannot bag as many wins in a month as a logo designer, plus if someone who won a $75 icon contest wins 9999 will definitely be a slap off. People should get the opportunity based on what their skill set. Coz if you measure the reward against the input, it could be really nothing. I understand the nature of this lottery and its purpose to motivate. But it may kill the motivation once its over. Like a Tsunami wave.
Anyway… good luck to all and It is really amazing to see around 1000 contest for the first time in the last few years.

I believe, after it ends, 99d will post at least numbers – e.g. “2000 contests won by total 320 designers” or similar, so we’ll know then. :)

i would curse him…..out loud! but alas, same goes for the guy who buys a single lottery ticket and wins when I bought a 100. I guess it just wasn’t meant to be.
Every designer here deserves one ticket even if that contest cost $1. It’s not about how small and big the prize of a certain contest, it’s about winning that contest. :)
