In our continuous quest for fun and timely blog post topics, we recently came across the little-known fact that October is Squirrel Awareness Month. And it appears some people actually do celebrate it, including members of The Squirrel Lover’s Club (who receive the organization’s aptly named “In a Nutshell” newsletter). And then, just today, The Associated Press published an article about a squirrel boom in the U.S.. Check it out: “Last year’s mild winter and a bumper crop of nuts have caused an apparent explosion in the squirrel population in patches of the country, bewildering fruit growers with their ravenous appetites, littering highway shoulders as roadkill, and keeping homeowners and pest control experts busy.” Woah!
Still, it seemed silly to seriously consider writing about squirrels – until we went looking for relevant design contests. Lo and behold, perhaps it’s not such a nutty topic after all – because it turns out the little rascals make for some pretty remarkable designs for a diverse array of industries and organizations.
