99nonprofits participants for September: A closer look at 6 organizations impacting their communities

99nonprofits is gaining momentum and, this week, we’re proud to announce our next group of participants! With 105 applications submitted to date, choosing from so many deserving organizations was no easy task! We’re thrilled to be working with these organizations and to help further their missions to make a positive impact. Take a few moments to read about each and, if you’re so inclined, visit their websites to see how you can get involved!

#1 – Sustainable Long Island (United States)

Sustainable Long Island has helped build safe, strong, and healthy communities across Long Island for the past 12 years. The organization aims to identify priorities for development and form strategies to advance sustainability on Long Island. Over its history, more than $500 million has been raised in public and private investments to help fulfill the vision of a better Long Island.

#2 – Hearing and Speech Center of Northern California (United States)

Based in San Francisco, the Hearing and Speech Center of Northern California offers professional support services to the hearing-impaired and those with communication challenges. The staff has been practicing state-of-the-art audiology for over 50 years by offering hearing testing and hearing aid services to children and adults of all ages. In addition to audiology, the organization also specializes in counseling, speech & language therapy, and youth & community education.

#3 – Musikverein Bermatingen (Germany)

Musikverein Bermatingen is a non-profit organization that fosters the love of music for young and old alike. Since 1821, the organization has put on gatherings in rural Germany to give youth the opportunity to perform and hone their musical abilities. Over the past 190 years, the organization has shifted to a more modern, youth-oriented focus to help develop young musicians and their passion for music.

#4 – RACE – Run Against Cancer Events (United States)

Run Against Cancer Events (RACE) is a Boston-based nonprofit that coordinates running, cycling and other sporting events to help raise funds and awareness for charitable organizations. On Thanksgiving Day, RACE is producing a road race in the town of Wellesley, Massachusetts called Turkey5. Participants can opt to run either 5 kilometers or 5 miles to raise funds, which will go to benefit both a food kitchen and a cancer charity.

#5 – 2RPH – Radio for the Print Handicapped (Australia)

2RPH’s postcard design contest can be viewed here.

2RPH is a radio reading service for people who cannot see, physically handle, or understand printed material. The organization has been in operation for almost 20 years, and has grown to serve seven major metropolitan areas throughout Australia. The station broadcasts readings of newspapers, magazines, books, and other printed material 24 hours a day.

#6 - Child and Youth Finance International (Netherlands)

Child and Youth Finance International aims to provide access to financial services and financial education to every child. Through education, they hope to help children and young adults establish a reliable source of income, and to eliminate debt and inter-generational poverty. By building a movement and establishing a network of resources, the organization has already been able to improve the financial situations of over 18 million children, and aims to assist 100 million children by 2015.
