Are you paying $200 for 10 different designs, or are you going to choose different designs from different artists and pay them each the same fee?

For what the brief says I think they want all 10 for $200... So thats mmm $20 bucks for design? Sorry but 10 designs for $200 that's not a fair prize.

I understand what Kari means.
Graphic design is an extremely important proffession. We create images, and recognizable visuals. We make concepts tangible realities. $20 per design sounds great to someone that hasn't been in the business too long-- and it is great for the client (which I understand).Pricing is used to reflect the time spent on projects. It is also suppose to dictate the level of quality recieved (NOTE: I said level of quality-- contest holders deserve the best--however, some 'bests'are better than others).
Because designers have fun with the challenge of competing--- or they just had a great idea-- they may be willing to accept lower prizes (which is understandable). This isn't always a great scenario for this profession because it's importance is often devalued. This contest is fair--it's just that quality designs deserve at least $25-$35 PER design.
But thats for a quality design << the contest holder will be the judge.

I agree, $20/icon would be acceptable, but $20 for a greeting card, in all of it's complexity, is a bit inadequate.

Please read the brief. What we are looking for here is NOT "rocket science:...they are merely greeting card covers that shouldn't take emore than 10 minutes each to create by someone with any degree of talent and imagination. C'mon...we are not asking for a Monet here! We are certain that someone will step up and create 10 covers in less than two hours time. Is ~$100/hour not a decent wage? How about working in a restaurant as a dishwasher for ten bucks an hour if you think this prize "is not fair"!

You're really not doing a good job of encouraging the designers to come up with designs for your project. Maybe you should hire a dishwasher to create your cards if you think it takes so little effort.

Don't be so negative. Is two hours of your time not worth this contest prize? If you have any imagination you can win this contest. Go for it and take the money! All we want is something creative to extend a greeting; nothing more, nothing less. I appreciate your comments and thanks for listening.- User

Since this is speculative work meaning there is no guarantee of winning, 10 designs is too much for one contest. A better idea would be to have each designer submit a design and if you like their style hire them to design the rest of the cards. It will be more of a headache if you have every designer posting 10 different card designs and numerous variations on each of those designs.

just one to second above comments from designers that 10 designs is, in effect, ten different contests. i know the contest holder sees the reason of it from his/her point of view, but i'm not sure any designer is going to create 10 different, unique designs for $20 each. i intend this only as feedback to the contest holder, that if they'd like (more) entries, perhaps consider simplifying the items requested. good luck, anyhow!

In response to all the negative folks:
T.S. Eliot wrote poems for greeting cards to make a living, so don't knock the profession of greeting card creation. For the contest owner:
I read in your brief that you have several topics for the designs. Perhaps you'd get more entries if each theme was a separate contest?
"Birthday (4 designs), Christmas Holiday/Season's Greetings (2 designs), New Year (2 designs), Anniversary (2 designs)"And then if a designer from one of those themes really stands out, you can contract them for further work. :)
(And yeah, I'd so totally enter.)

Thanks your response would be great chers...- User

The market we are targeting is for automated e-cards to be sent to family, friends and business customers/associates. WhinQ is targeting the business professional in a very big way. Log onto the placeholder website and read some blogs: www.whinq.com

Loudguy, obviously you didn't realize that you were dealing with real designers here, not dishwashers. If you want template style cards, then maybe www.whinq.com is the place for you to get what you want. Otherwise you will expect to pay for the time and thought that goes into any design, whether its a card a logo or whatever. Also, a little respect goes a long way.

lol did he really compare designers to dishwashers. In the real world you would pay in the thousands for this many illustrations, you can't possibly have an attitude and be this cheap. average price for design school is roughly 50-60,000. its not rocket science, its called respect. Then you mention raising it to 350 and you don't follow through, Bad business.

contest holder,
Just FYI dishwashers get paid minimum wage at best, while the average wage for a qualified educated designer is $60-$125 an hour. Card designs are not just wham bam slap it together brainless work.... if that's what you think, why don't you do the 10 cards on your home computer, I'm sure they will look great?? If you just want clip art slapped on a colored background, then that should be easy enough right??? I would have entered the contest, as I have experience in this field of design, but it's not worth it.
p.s. respect does go a long way. Good luck.

I see nothing wromng with clip art slapped onto a colorful background as I believe there is some creativity and thought that even goes into that process. Remember, this in not rocket science and all we are looking for are some card covers that exhibit a particular emotion. You may want to reconsider your thought about this contest because what we have received from a number of creative minds will achieve our objective here. It's obvious that some folks think our prize in worth their efforts. Thanks for your comments.

Attention Entrants (and might be's)...
Then winner of this contest will be contacted for a bid on creating several hundred card covers at a price that will make your entering this contest "worth while". This contest is an "audition" to see who can create the type card covers that appeal to us. Doing your best now may result in tremendous opportunity later. We will be looking for several hundred designs over the next couple months. So put on your thinking caps and create some stuff to make you stand out from the rest. For those of you who previously submitted some negative comments (and you know who you are)...we suggest that you stay away as you will not be considered. Sorry.

jweb3d, #46 LOLOL Genious. I guess it didn't fit the clipart criteria to get picked.
Oh, and designers, don't forget, you have to have 10 that he likes to get picked as the winner.
And, and one more thing, don't forget to read the copyright terms of the images you're using to make sure that putting them on cards for resale is legal !!!! (As, image providers generally don't allow their images to be used on cards that will be sold)
Have a keen day.

I have read the brief, all the comments and feedback. I was thinking about entering this contest as an "audtion" but I am confused. In the brief CH stated no photographs, only vector art. Yet I see some entries using photographs that have received five star ratings. Also, you cannot have vector files submitted as TIFFs, JPEGs or PSD files. By nature they are raster based files. You can convert vector files to raster, and I am assuming that is what the CH means. But photographs are not vector, and yet they are here with great ratings. What is it that you want CH? Also, if the cards are a free service, photographs can be used from stock photography, to the best of my understanding. CH, is this a free e-card service, or will there be a fee to buy cards. If so, you will have to pay for extended licensing for the photographic images. So, maybe there are some issues that a dishwasher wouldnt think of?

7LineDesign, thank you for you interest in our contest. We are not opposed to images being used and would actually prefer it, however we are quite concerned to the copyright issues.
As for the model of use. Our customers will be subscribing to our service and would sign up for birthday, anniversary and other recurring events and an "e-card" would be sent. To clarify, they would not be buying the cards, but sending the images, along with a sentiment, electronically to some else. Our paid subscription service would allow them to choose the card (image), write the sentiment and provide an email address to which it would be sent.

Just to clarify...you said:
As for the model of use. Our customers will be subscribing to our service and would sign up for birthday, anniversary and other recurring events and an "e-card" would be sent. To clarify, they would not be buying the cards, but sending the images, along with a sentiment, electronically to some else. Our paid subscription service would allow them to choose the card (image), write the sentiment and provide an email address to which it would be sent.
Are you suggesting that by paying to send a card by email there is any difference from paying for and mailing out a card or hand delivering? Selling a card is selling a card, whether its in a box or on the internet. Beware people.

Great work Jad Graphics. Even though the Happy Anniversay and the Happy New Year in the upper left are very nice, I don't see the tie in between the graphic and text. Also could you change one of the Merry Christmas to Happy Holidays an another to Seasons Greetings. Good work.
Thank you.

Dzine, thank you for commenting. Have you submitted any designs? We don't see them. Do you have any questions?

I just checked one of many stock photography sites, BigStockPhoto. They specifically mention that their regular licensing agreement does NOT cover E-cards. This falls into the same category as posters, postcards, web-based applications, etc, used on a product for resale. Designers be aware of this. Copyright infringement is a big deal to photographers as much as it is to designers. As a beginning photographer with my own images on that site, I fully understand. If you are using them, make sure to pay the site and the photographer what they deserve! And, CH I would love to enter this contest. But late coming in, I don't have time to spit out 10 original from scratch illustrations for $200, "audidtion" or not. Thank you and good luck to ya.

I would check with each stock photography site I used as they have different copyright terms.
