Background image can be easily removed if not liked by the client and have the gradient background colour go all the way down the page instead.
I like this one. It has a clear delineation of the header and nav bar, the side bar and a footer. You also stuck with the blue request. Kudos. Could you make the photographic header go to the top more and put the logo and title on top of it?
Where did everybody get the idea to put a photo gallery in?

I thought it strange myself that many of the submissions weren't based on the blue as per the brief :-)
Being a coder and a designer myself, I always keep in mind the ease of being able to code up a mockup into xhtml/css.
As for the photo-gallery, I thought it was a good idea, let's the viewer see some of the golf course before they progress further into the site....
As to why others use it in their submissions, I guess it's because they see an entry that gets good reviews and they copy some of the elements (one of the bad things about these contests I'm afraid :-(
PS: Forgot to mention, if the weather section is a requirement, that is easily added to the bottom of the page.

The client would like to know if you could change the header photo. They do not like the shot of the telephone pole in the center. They are very partial to the shot with the clubhouse in the background. Would you be able to swap header photos?
