****FINAL UPDATE BEFORE END**** I really feel terrible that I have not been able to provide the feedback that I was able to at the beginning of the contest. I'm going to provide some final hints to developers....
1. Graphical elements - Must make us say "Wow..." We need the design to be attractive. Incorporate the graphics, don't just place them.
2. Make it functional. Think as if you were our customer. We don't need all the text on the front page, subpages will provide details... tease me...
3. Professional but still Web 2.0ish... Icons are great, I really like the small ones, but they may not be necessary. Maybe as a rollover or next to text items...
4. Don't waste space, but don't crowd. Too much white space can be bad, but I don't want to feel overwhelmed. There are some AMAZING designs on here and we are really struggling with this decision. It will take us some time to decide. There is STILL TIME LEFT!! WE HAVE NOT PICKED A WINNER!!
Good luck!!!
Menu Bar - Horizontal
Home | Services (Will become a drop down menu) | FAQ | Contact Us | Login | {Search Box}On the main page, I need an area for news, a link for our services, an introduction section, etc.
We had such great success here with our logo that we are looking to complete our design for our web page as well. We are a small industrial cage and rack washer company that services large pharmaceutical research facilities and hospitals. We work on very expensive, high-end machinery. We maintain, repair, and inspect the machinery and train the facility personnel on operations and maintenance.
READ OUR BRIEF! THERE ARE MANY DETAILS!! Let us know if you need more!

Jaimie B: Yes and no. For design purposes, only a homepage is necessary to start. The winning design will probably be chosen based on the homepage. The subpages will be required to be completed to receive the full prize. Subpages will be completed following the contest.
For everyone else: Are the instructions clear enough? I think they might be a little confusing. What other information would you suggest I provide?

It's fine. In fact, it's just the right amount of information:)
@webknix, you cant open the file because it is a .docx and can only be opened by newer versions of word.
@Washers, Inc., if you save the file as a Word 200-2003 file, everyone can open it;)

I would just like to say that if you are lacking stock photos, an easy and affordable way to avoid buying things you might not use is istockphoto.com. if you create an account, you can save images in a "lightbox" that you could then link here on the site. Then we could use the watermarked low res versions for mockups and it's an easy way to show us plenty of photos to choose from without costing you a lot of money.
happy mothers day!

Happy Mother's Day everyone! Read the brief! I have updated it with some stock photos to play with! Think Mac when designing! I love the style of those websites! (But keep it professional!!!) Unfortunately I will not be providing feedback tomorrow (First Mother's Day with the new baby and my wife wants us to spend it with NO COMPUTER!), but come Monday, you will be provided with DETAILED FEEDBACK. I'm a little short for time, so I apologize if the feeback is not as detailed as I would like, but I promise to make up for it! Keep those designs coming!!

Just wondering really exactly how many pages to be designed are involved in this contest. If you are having someone code this design for you, there really is no need to have every single page 'designed'.
You would only need one subpage to shows how content would be displayed on the inners pages (to may way of thinking anyway ;-) The code would then use this as a 'template' for the rest of the site.
The only other page that would be different would be the contact form possibly.
Thoughts?

I think it depends on what would be on the subpages. For instance, if the services pages were approached as nice sales pieces (and why shouldn't they be?) then they could be more than just information inserted into a template. Do you really think this should be left in the hands of a non-designer?

@articultiteddesigns - my question was meant for the contest holder to clarify, not have others jump in with comments that really aren't helpful you know :-)
I did read the brief and and it still doesn't give a number does it? It is rather open ended, hence my question. Yes, being a designer and a coder, I can see how many pages *may* eventually be needed to make up the whole site due to the menu items listed, (there is also a dropdown menu - which doesn't mention how many links that would contain). So how many pages do you believe need be designed (not coded) for this contest - do you know exactly?

Nadia P: As for the design portion, I am looking for an overall look to the website, which would be the homepage. That is one. I would like the designer to take the homepage and create a common page for the services. That would be two. A general template page, so that I can generate many of the other pages. That should be simple, three. And a contact us form page, four.
As for this contest. A homepage will probably be enough to win the design. If you can design a homepage, you can generate the others. $1200 for four pages is still pretty reasonable, IMHO. In fact, those additional pages will not be very complicated. The coding part is what is important, so that it works properly. And if you read the brief, you'll see what services we offer.
Does that clear it up?

That's standard 2.0 search and nav bar, you can find it in fireworks, photoshop, corel, etc... nothing wrong with it. In fact the apple version stands out a bit better anyhow...

@ devise, O DEAR CALL IN THE COPS =D!
There are millions millions and millions of webpages on the internet, ofcourse after a while u will find elements that other websites use in other websites.
I can allready point at 20 submitted and provide it with a website that uses the same menu, background, header, background image placement...

Originality is a rare thing in web pages.
Especially standard layouts. Almost every page has a very similar web resamblance except for a few. Nice first trys V1 ;). Not so common and original. Sadly common layouts have more sell. The top rated submissions look like some joomla skins but not the designer fault of course. That's is people's wishes these days.

Juba... When designing a website for customers, I don't pick designs that I might find interesting. I pick a design that is attractive and that people who don't spend much time on the internet could easily navigate. It needs to be functional, attractive, and serve it's purpose.
My mother once said that if you don't have anything to say, don't say anything at all. A compliment followed by a backhanded insult is still an insult.

Because i have a quote box and intro doesnt mean its "surprisingly" similar, there allot of differences between my design and "jesse's". Also his site reminds me of the microsoft, i think it was vista or surface....
I can proof its all custom design, and i'm inspired by an old design of me i build for Media mansion, and the quote box idea is from the Adobe Spry Ajax framework homepage. But than again... allot of pages have quote boxes....
So.. You got to be kidding me.

Congratulations to Simonbun! His design #77 is the winning design. You don't know how tough it was to pick this design! We agonized over some great mockups. In the end, his design met all of our requests and when it came down to it, we will be proud to use his design as the face of our company!!
We want to extend a giant thank you to all that participated and will definitely come back to use 99designs in the future!!
