Hello designers! This is my first attempt at a contest on 99Designs, and thought it was appropriate because both sites (99Designs and Your Mapper) are powered by crowdsourcing and value community and expert opinions and skills.

Also note that the winner will be given credit for the logo on our new site when it launches, as well as a link back to their own website.

    Have fun!

Thanks for a great start on the logo design.

#1 I like the concept of a globe and an arrow pointing to a place on it. I wish the icon part was a little more abstract, bolder, and stylized. Also, it doesn't read well when small and in one color.

#2 The idea of a compass rose is good if that's what you were going for. The word Mapper is too small.

#3 I like this direction of a grid (but this looks like tic-tac-toe) with a point or pin showing location. Maybe something interesting can be done with the text too, though I like the cleanness of it.

Hope the comments are constructive and not too harsh!

#4 A folding map is a good idea, if it could be more abstracted since that idea is used a lot. Your Mapper as the pin or marker is a good idea too as long as it's readable at a small scale.

#5 Love the idea of an irregular stylized city block design with a marker in it. Too small though. Maybe trying to make it larger or incorporate the text into the idea more?

#6 #10 Like the connected points to show location/movement in space. The service is more about your personal location being featured, and showing lots of surrounding locations or events. Maybe some thing with more points and showing them in relation to a center, and adding something to hint at a map or location?

#7 Globe with a pin is good, but I'd like to stress something more hyper-local and on a neighborhood level, instead of something on the global scale. A globe is used too often in logos I think.

#8 #9 Compass rose idea is coming along, and like the Y and M as points on compass. An issue is that the text Your Mapper should be in a similar scale to the icon so it can be readable when shrunk.

#11 Showing lots of points and highlighting one is a good concept, if you can include some clues that the points are related to location or a map.

    Some ideas or tips.

Feel free to use the Y or M letters (or both) in your design by turning them into part of the icon.

The scale of icon to text should be something like #3 where the icon and text are both visible at a small scale.

As you refine an idea, you could include a version with the icon and text, and a version with just the stand alone icon to see how it works without the text near it.

    Great work everyone!

#12 Not really the right direction for the concept I don't think.

#13 Not sure how this might work out. A person made of arrows is potentially a good idea, as long as they are tied back to a map or location or neighborhood.

#14 A lat/lon grid is a good start, some potential if it can be a bit more bold, and have some innovative aspect to it.

#15 The icon part is a good start, slightly hard to make out letters, maybe more work on the design of the compass rose? The typeface is a bit complex, without adding much to the concept.

#16 I like how the icon is slightly different than the icon and text combo. I think the icon is a bit too detailed to be made out at a small scale. Has potential though.

Note about color. I should probably clarify the requirement of "1-2 colors."

I just mean to say that some version of the logo needs to be able to be reproduced in 1-3 colors without it chaning too much. If you want to create a slick/glossy version of the logo, feel free to use gradients, reflection, borders, 2.5D, etc as long as it adds something (either visually or functionally) and it can be reduced to less colors or a flat version easily.

Part of the logo design will be to determine 2-3 colors that will be used on the final website design. So color choice in the logo is important. Usually something like 2 main, complimentary colors, and 1 kind of highlight or important third color.

Also note that final artwork should be available in a vector format, like AI, EPS, etc including fonts used.

    Thanks and keep it up!

#18 #26 the latter is looking better, but the compass rose needs some sort of design change, thanks.

#19 That's more interesting. I like the dots and grid showing location, but it might not stand well alone. Text is good, maybe aligning it or incorporating it into the dot idea would be good.

#20 #21 #27 Not sure these are the right direction for the logo.

#23 Good direction. Maybe the map and pin could be simplified to be clearer and become more of an icon than a kind of line art? The bounce text might need to be relaxed or worked with some.

#25 Great idea of laying a folding map on its side, like the start of this idea. The arrow is a little lost due to its size. Putting a dot between the name might be good if it was tied into the logo somehow, but where it is now might confuse people into thinking it's a dash or dot-com dot. Like ths style and colors.

#28 I like the concept and tieing the icon into the O on Your. Maybe try some non-primary colors? I get the target concept, but maybe each ring could be different in terms of spacing, thickness, color, with the center dot more unique? The arrow might be redundant.

#29 This is a bit better. Linking the words together and showing a relationship with other points or people. Maybe run with it more with the circles on in your mapper, the O, A, P, and P? What would be the standalone icon part of it?

#30 The pin is a good concept, and like the "speech bubble" text window. How about stylizing the pin, making the bubble more like a conversation bubble, and doing something subtle but interesting with the text?

#31 Looks alright, but I like the way #30 and #32 are headed.

#32 #33 Love the speech balloon showing data collaboration which is what the site is about. The pin and the bubble are a bit redundant. Maybe put a flat target under the speech bubble, and put the words outside of it? The bubble is the Your and the target is the Mapper (place on the surface of something). Maybe nothing inside the bubble? Maybe a letter or other symbol?

#34 That's a good idea connecting the Y and O and making the O a pushpin thing. The pushpin idea is a little vague though. Maybe Your could be emphasized more than Mapper (probably true for all designs)? What's the stand alone icon, The O and the slanted target?

#35 good progress. How about slanting the target like it's laying on an invisible ground? Maybe Your Mapper on different lines to the right? Seems like something should go in the bubble for the standalone, but not sure what.

    Hi Michael,

To keep track of what feedback is for what designer, and so that you can see design descriptions and comments from designers, it's best to click on each design and respond there.

    Good luck with the contest!

Here are some concepts that I haven't seen explored yet that could be incorporated or started with:

    Concept Ideas

Flag shape - for a type of pin, claiming your location. not patriotic though, symbol on flag.

Person shape - for the Your part, maybe as a map pin or one of the letters or both. Shows ownership, individual empowerment

Multi Point star/ explosion - showing location, expanding out, showing importance, excitement

Blast Radius - like an expading target blast radius show a strong center expanding out to edges, fading

X marks the spot - use of this for your location

Hour and a half left. 18 good looking submissions right now. The winner will probably be the one who refines their idea the most, but I can tell you it's going to be tough to choose. I do however guarantee that someone will get the award!

I've just awarded the prize to EastSideDesigns.biz for his submission of logo #158. Congrats!

His logo won because of some very simple ideas that he came up with that lent themselves well to the site. One is the use of the bendy Y person in a previous design, and the use of the little smile in the winning design. Also the faded blast radius target element is really great for showing importance to things that are close to the user, without looking too much like a bullseye. I'll hopefully work with him to finalize the design into a finished logo for the site.

I'd like to thank everyone else that participated. In addition to giving credit to EastSideDesigns.biz on the final site for his logo, I'd also like to credit on the site some of the other designers for some great ideas, especially helio brazil, wired iris, pacmanb, netso, and year_ago_today. Some parts of them might be turned into icons on the site even though they are not in the logo. I'll post a comment back here when the site is up and running in a few months at www.yourmapper.com

Thanks to 99designs for a great site and service. I was really amazed at the number of submissions and the quality of the designer's work. It make it difficult to make a final decision, that's for sure!
