for the contest Homepage Redesign
Submitted design #48
Hi,
After all the comments, feedback and considering the brief specs, I came to the conclusion that the goal to be achieved cannot be reached in a conventional way.
Too many elements, essential and secondary, strict color scheme and layout arrangement resulted in many similar designs and I decided to follow a different approach and deviate a bit!
The main goal is to make the first time visitor to understand some very basic things:
1. What is this site
2. What kind of content is there
3. What should I do
The elements, answering the questions are what I call "essential" and what I have included in the "compact" (or "collapsed") view of the first page.
The design you see, is what the 1st time visitor will see and if he choose to interact with it in some way (i.e. click on the photo etc) the "expanded" view (with the rest of the page) will appear.
If the design fails to trigger an interaction then, the rest of the page would not succeed too. Basically the whole game is this part of the page and this is the reason I choose to not include all of your required elements at once.
In case you are interested in this approach, I could provide the rest of the page, based in the concept explained above.
Thank you
PS: the main photo used is not commercialy available and I used it only for the demo draft. Of course you will choose photos from the member's database I guess.
this isnt too bad - I dont know about this one - youre going to have to give me some time to think about it.
In case you don't like this approach, I could provide the regular full-page equivalent too, always within the same UI style (layout and colors).
This is a great direction you are going in, Please continue down this path.

Hi,
This is how the homepage (top part) will look like when another item in the sub-navigation pane is selected (i.e. blogs). The blog list can be scrollable or in another scenario, we can set a fixed number of blogs to rotate them (for example 4 in total and always 1 of them to fill the main area.
I will post the rest of homepage elements (bottom part) in a while.
Thanks
this is good - I am trying to figure out if I want to go this direction or jktress'
I dont like how you have chosen to show they are on the blog page - just a change in color (without moving up) would work.

Hi,
I guess you mean something like this for the sub-navigation pane (with no movement for the selected item).
yes...
I will let you know what happens - you are definitely in mind for this contest....

One small addition that I promised in an earlier post, is the bottom elements after the welcome/signup area. The empty placeholder is for the contests.
ok - I need some time to sit on this and figure out which direction I want to go - I will let you know.
I believe you have a good idea of what is all about my concept and minor tweaks can be applied if we come to that point; the choice is yours!
In all cases, thank you for considering my entry as a possible solution and for your time.
