- Brief Summary
-
We are a healthcare focused data services company, and while we have a good number of very talented web programmers and database analysts, we do not have a top flight graphical designer who can create knock-your-socks-off site design mockups and user interface (UI) schemes.
We are looking for a redesign of an existing online report library interface. We need a fresh, new, modern, intuitive interface design for our library. This is a UI design project only – we will take care of hooking up the winning interface design to our datasets and building the underlying website application. You create the look and functionality, we’ll handle the application.
The key needs are ease-of-use, logical functionality and intuitive process flow for users, and modern, clean design. Solutions for HTML/CSS/scripting/Flash/Adobe Flex sites are all equally OK and encouraged for the design, we can code around all of these. Other design solutions may also be OK, but check with us first.

general comment on contest scope:
Remember that we are not asking for a coded solution, we are asking for concept and UI design only (look/feel/functionality direction).
Think of it like this: we have a report library, we want it to look better and work better and more intuitively for users. What ideas can you come up with, and can you give us a prototype design and tell us how your designed solution operates? If you can, and we like it best, you'll win.
If 7 days is not enough time (we'd prefer it be 14 days, but we're limited to a max duration of 7 by this site) to do a complete prototype, we would not be against selecting a contest winner based on best design presented so far in 7 days, and continuing to finalize the UI design with the declared winner after conclusion of the contest, if the winner was amenable to this scenario.
7 days is a short window, we recognize this fact. But it should be enough time for a prototype design that we can understand, develop and work on together. If no one can meet this schedule, then perhaps a week just is too short a window, and we'll end the contest with no winner.
But, we hope someone out there can knock this out of the park.

reagarding functionality:
Given that this is a UI design for an application, there are two perhaps equally important parts:
1. the overall look and design
2. the functionality (how it all works)#2 is really something that may not be self-evident from a set of page prototypes, so it may be helpful for entrants to explain to us how everything fits together. This could be via a private message to us after you post a design, or you could send an e-mail to the address in the contest posting laying your idea out for us. Of course, if you think your design is so self-explanatory that it speaks for itself, so be it - leave it up to us to guess your intent.
Maybe thinking of it like this would help: pretend you are in our conference room, and we are displaying your beautiful page mockups on the wall. You are standing in front of the room giving us a presentation on how you see the report library working ("First, the user goes to page X, where he can do this and that. If he does this, then he is taken to this page where he sees Y, and has the options to do A,B, or C"). Write down in words what you would say to us in person. Give us your UI design proposal in words to go along with your prototype.
Make sense?

Note to all entrants on design feedback from us, now that we have designs coming in:
We hope to discuss all entries as a group in the mornings this week, Monday through Thursday, and comment in the late morning/early afternoons on all new designs each day. We will also leave a round of comments in the late evenings each day as well for designs that come in later each day.
First round of our comments will be posted late morning/early afternoon Monday for all entries that arrive by 9am EST Monday morning.
From comments received so far, it seems like we have a number of designers hyped and ready to go - that is awesome, and we look forward to all your first prototypes.
Remember, it is helpful to us if you can comment on your UI ideas, and if you are submitting a multi-step or multi-page UI interface, let us know how you see things all tying together. If you are submitting a one page mockup, with plans to design other pages based off our comments on your initial mockup, let us know this as well via an e-mail or private message.
Thanks!

There was a question today that should be shared with all potential designers regarding whether or not our report library is secured behind a unique user login screen.
The answer is yes. All users of the report library must log in with a unique user ID and password provided by us to them as clients. This means that there is room for user customization such as: remembering past run reports (exists currently); scheduling future reports (exists currently); perhaps allowing for default report parameters or views, etc.)
Our report library is a 100% secured site requiring unique user log in and authentication.
Also one other clarification on my prior posting regarding daily group review of entries...by group, I was referring to a group of Treo Solutions reviewers, NOT a group meeting of designers with active entries.
Sorry if there was any confusion.

For those interested in speaking to us regarding the contest, or if you have specific questions, want to run an idea by us before diving in, etc., you can call us at 800.545.6567, extension 233. We are in the United States Eastern time zone, so try to call during the day/early evening.
Your call will be directed to a gentleman named Chris Kelly. Chris is spearheading our overall appliations development agenda at Treo, and he is more than happy to talk about the contest, our thoughts, the report library functionality, your ideas, anything that might help you as you consider your designs.
When you call, if an automated attendant picks up, press "7" to be connected to Chris. If a real live person answers, tell them you are calling about the design contest, and wish to be connected to extension 233's voicemail (don't worry, this will connect you to Chris, not his voicemail). Everyone here is aware of the contest and knows who you should be connected to.
Again, don't be shy about calling if it will help you with your designs.
- Terry
If an automated response answers, press 7 to be forwarded.

VERY IMPORTANT MESSAGE TO THOSE WHO HAVE ENTERED OR ARE CONSIDERING ENTRY!!!
We recognize that that scope of this contest is large, and there is a lot of work to do on your part to get a finalized and workable UI design by Friday evening (the scheduled end date), especially when you consider this is the type of design contest that mandates a good deal of back-and-forth between us and you as we work on development from initial designs, through revisions, to final designs.
If we had a choice, we would have made this a 14 day contest, or longer. But, 7 days is the maximum duration allowed, so we had to go with it (I have contacted 99designs about the possibility of extending the deadline, but I won't hear back until tomorrow at the earliest).
Based on public and private feedback from the designer community watching/participating in this contest, we anticipate a good numbers of entries this week. We want to be able to give all entrants the comments and feedback you need and deserve...and allow you the time to respond to such feedback with even better designs.
That being said, we are proposing the following:
While the deadline for submitting design entries to this contest will end Friday evening, we would like to continue the contest offline with some or all contestants beyond Friday for a period of a few days until we can declare a final winner. Here's what we will do:
1. if an initial design is not received on this site prior to the close of the 7-day window, it will NOT be considered
2. we will actively comment and give feedback all week to all entrants to work individually with you to allow you to create the best solution for our consideration
3. At the close of the contest window Friday evening (EST), we will contact ALL contestants and let you know one of three things:
a. you are our winner (if we have a clear best and complete solution)
b. you are eliminated from the contest (we don't want to string anyone along or waste your time if there is no chance in your being a viable winning design)
c. we would like to continue to work with you "offline" for a short time so we can confidently make a winning choice. We will communicate with you via e-mail, and you can submit latter-stage designs via e-mail to us as well. We will let all continuing contestants know when we have declared a winner, and if it looks like a design is not going to work, we will let you know that as well so as not to string this out for anyone.
We do not want to drag this out any longer than necessary (we have no intentions of this going past 14 days max), we will absolutely be paying $3000 to the winner, but we want to give all designers full time and opportunity to show us your best work.
Many of you have commented that the scope very tough given a 7 day contest, and we concur, so we hope this proposed approach gives those interested more enticement to participate, and those who do participate more time to fully develop their ideas with us.
Thank you.

we have nothing against a new color combination. Although I will admit we historically have been partial to greyscales, greens, light blues, black and white. But, we are a bunch of data geeks, and picking colors isn't our strong suit. If you have a killer new color palette for us, go for it!

I just wanted to chime in here. We are loving the things you folks are doing and are pretty excited about having this redesign and then using these elements in future applications we are working on. As you might guess, if we find strong folks, we would like to possibly continue to work with them on future projects that come up. Anyway, you can probably tell that we are deliberately being mum on a direction for the new design. We have some ideas, but we felt if we shared them we would hamper outside the box thinking. At this point I think it makes sense to make a few points:
I think this contest drills down to three basic parts, as far as I can tell: the opening “what do I want to do,” the middle “pick my report” and “choose my parameters for that report” and the end “listing of the reports.” The opening listed will also holds (and this is where most of you have worked most up till now) the basic themes and navigation methodology for the library. We are excited by what we see.
I am really interested in seeing more of the middle and end parts from the folks that have already posted. This is where things will get interesting.
Note: as you have probably guessed, the create new report, create a scheduled report and run batch report (the middle) are virtually identical, with the two latter ones adding a frequency and multiple parameters respectively.
The same can be said for the end part, where we display either previously run reports or scheduled to run reports. Both these pages are, in essence, the same, they list the reports and parameters chosen. In the first, you can view the report, in the second one, you can edit the chosen parameters.
Thanks
Chris Kelly

Another note: When putting together the "choose report" part, we would like to incorporate the sample reports section into this and removed as a seperate part. Users being able to visualize the reports and choose that way (maybe using a picture and a description) would be helpful. We like to add reports from time to time and a user seeing a new option as a thumbnail or expandable view might make sense. Just another thought on our part...

PLEASE NOTE THAT THE DEADLINE FOR THIS CONTEST HAS BEEN EXTENDED TO NEXT WEDNESDAY !!!!
We asked 99designs to extend this contest 5 more days past the original end date, given the scope and complexity of the contest. We hope you don't mind, and will use this extra time to fully develop your UI designs. We are all really impressed with the variety and talent we have seen so far, and cannot wait to see what the next few days bring as we work to picking a final winner. Thank you to all designers, and keep it up!

SOME USEFUL INFORMATION FOR THOSE WORKING ON "RECENTLY RUN REPORTS" or "REPORT ARCHIVE" TYPE SCREENS:
One of the important elements of our desired UI is a page/section/window/screen/interface element where users can access/view/re-run recently run reports.
Some designers have already started submitted mockups for this feature. Many of these mockups are showing titles of past reports only. We think our users will benefit from more detailed information on past run reports. I have posted a screenshot of our current 'Recently Run Reports' page from our existing report library, to show the detail of report parameter information we think is important to include. You'll notice that both single-report and batch run reports are shown. Single run reports are always delivered as .pdf files, while batches are always delivered as .zip files (containing multiple .pdf report files within).
Here is a link to that screenshot: http://www.treosolutions.com/scheduled.gif
Hope this helps.

Contest Holder: I wanted to point out that you need to be careful when selecting a winning design - specifically copyright issues. I'm seeing some icons used that I'm pretty sure are not the design's icons. Some that may be taken from icon collections that are for personal use only, or from other websites. I'd ask for proof of design or purchase as commercial stock icons from all entries. You could request proof of design by seeing the photoshop or illustrator files of the actual icon builds, and you could request proof of commercial stock icons by a link to purchase them (and or receipt). I'm 99% sure the icons from the series of #40 and #6 are not legal to use. They use elements of Mac application icons in them and that's a dead give away. And I'm leery about #26, but not sure.
I've got some ideas about this contest, but I'm not sure I will have time to enter. Good luck to you and all the legitimate designers.

I did not mean to offend you. Let me clarify what I was trying to say.
A lot of designers and design students do not understand copyright usage and infringement. The point I was trying to get across to the contest holder or "client" was they need to make sure they cover their own rear. Even if they are unaware of stolen, borrowed, or closely emulated icons, they can still get in trouble.
Now, your icons look very, very similar to Dave Brasgalla's "World of Aqua Folders" ( http://iconfactory.com/freeware/preview/woaf ) just traced using a technique similar to fasticon's "Green Ville Icons" ( http://fasticon.com/freeware/?p=4 )
The whole point is that the contest holder needs to make sure they get proof from ALL contestants that their icons are commercially available or custom illustrated.

And I'll just go ahead and clarify why I was leery about the other 2.
#6 is using what I can count as 3 separate icon styles, anyone who could illustrate icons with that kind of detail wouldn't mix such different styles.
#26 is perplexing me because the icons are so very nicely done, but the overall design is less than polished. It's just a little odd.
Now both designers may have gone out and bought stock icons to submit this project, again all I'm saying is get proof Mr. Contest Holder.

Weshine don't start accusing people of stealing icons. I have made those icons from scratch and I will be happy to show the contest holder proof of that. I have had no inspiration from other icons when I made those icons so please, give me a link to an icon that looks like mine cause I sure as hell can't find any.

We understand the importance of assuring all designs are original and our copyright bases are covered. Rest assured we are considering this in our decision-making process and will be requiring proof of original concept for all images and UI designs before picking our winner.
That being said, we can put this discussion topic to rest, and not get into any back-and-forth between entrants. All conversations regarding copyright etc. should be limited to entrants and ourselves.
End of subject.

WHERE WE STAND IN CONTEST WINNER SELECTION:
We are going to be narrowing down the field on Monday and Tuesday. We will contact all entrants privately whether or not they are a finalist or not, hopefully on Wednesday.
We are basing selection of finalists on the following items submitted:
1. main page and its ability to intuitively direct users to the key report library tasks, with a minimum of distractions
2. ease and intuitiveness of running a new report (single report AND batch reports). This includes the UI functionality for previewing sample reports AT THE TIME OF SELECTING REPORTS
3. accessing, reviewing and editing parameters of previously run reports
4. accessing, reviewing scheduled reports and adding new scheduled reports
We are going to considering the ease of transition from UI design to working code, flexibility of design from a coding standpoint, and overall practicality of UI to our development team.
We MAY ask finalists to call us to share their design details with us, and answer some questions.

WHERE ARE WE NOW - CONTEST CLOSED FOR FORMAL ENTRIES...
We would like to express our deepest thanks and highest compliments to all that chose to participate in our UI redesign contest. We are confident that we will have a winner in this group, and are in the process right now of trying to wrap our heads around the overwhelming variety of UI ideas you all have presented to us.
We will be contacting some of you privately as finalists between now and early next week to discuss your designs in detail. We will be announcing our winner within 6 days on this site. To those awaiting feedback on designs submitted within the last couple of days of the contest, please be patient - we are stating with the earlier entries and moving up through the last entries as we come to our finalist/winner decision.
Again, thank you to all that participated, we are working toward selecting a winner now, but we anticipate taking a few days to make our final decision.
