Regarding design #2
I like the fact that you were smart enough to not just put the NR together without a border. But I still think it's a little too simple. The N and R are too obvious. Something a little more creative and/or abstract would be nice.
Also, instead of a border, maybe try experimenting with backgrounds or backgrounds with borders.

not really what I'm looking for. the mark isn't brandable, and the font really doesn't communicate the modern professionalism I'm looking to give the site. it all seems a little off balance too.
