- Brief Summary
-
This Flash multi-media player has recently moved to a new domain and needs a new logo. The product's key selling points are ease of use, flexibility and wealth of features. There can be at least some "tech" feel to the logo but not too much.

Wow, thanks everyone for the entries so far. This is my first contest so I'm still working to get my head around the right protocols etc. I'll start providing individual feedback shortly, I just thought I should make an appearance and provide some general comments.
I think I prefer the designs that include a play button although I'm certainly not excluding ones that don't. The "spectrum analyser" look is good too, as are a couple of the more abstract designs. Some of them are a bit too abstract though and don't imply the right sort of functionality.
I appreciate the effort some of you have taken to research the product, provide different options, etc.
I'd like to post about this contest in my blog so my users can have a look and let me know what they think. If there's any reason I shouldn't do this could someone please let me know?
BTW, I've just been reading some of the designer's comments in the development blog and I've got a bit frightened about copy-cat designs and other dodgy goings-on. I'm trying to bring myself up to speed here but if anyone feels like pointing out anything I should be aware of in my contest, feel free to PM me.

Only input I can think of at this time (seeing that you specifically requested Vector for flexibility of both print & web renderings) is you should keep in mind that when dealing with Vector, there is only one filter/effect I have found that converts to paths/Points & stays fully up-scalable without losing any quality, thats the "Mesh Gradient".
Other filter/Effects such as transparencies, bevels, standard gradients, embossing, etc... do "NOT" convert to a path/points Vector. What happens in the conversion is they become embedded as a Bitmap, & as we all know, a Bitmap loses it's quality when up-scaled. For a 100% Layered/Scalable Vector that retains "ALL" quality on up-scaling you may want to shy away from Filter/Effect entries (Seeing that these will not convert to 100% Vector & leave you with embedded Bitmaps).
I recently found out about the "Mesh Gradient" myself a few days ago through another designer that was kind enough to share the information. So if the effect being used is in fact a "Mesh Gradient" then you are still within your 100% vector quality.
Good luck to you. :)

Thanks very much, I wasn't aware of this. It probably won't be a deciding factor but it's certainly worth being aware of.
BTW I'm having a hell of a time rating these entries and I'm not entirely happy with what I've done. Please don't take the ratings too literally - two stars doesn't mean I don't like it and three stars can still win.

Transparencies, gradient meshes and gradients will all expand in vector shapes.
Emboss filters, 3D mappings...everything can go into vector, you just need how to build them.
Why are you confusing the contest holder, and since
you have discovered Gradient Mesh tool a few days ago i don't think you are in the position
to explain what is and what isn't. This may affect CH decission. All the bests,
ulahts

"standard gradients"..."convert to bitmap" - what do you understand from standard gradients.
I have worked in a printing house as machinist for 7 years. I have seen layout compositions
using both gradients and flat colors all are very ok in printing.- User

And for your knoledge scorpionagency - illustrator has a tool called opacity mask.
That's the most pure vector transparency i have ever found in any software in 11years of graphics
and reproduces very well on all mediums, fully scalable and easy to edit.- User

okaaay... thanks ulahts for your input. I'm thinking I'll leave these comments here until I'm sure scorpionagency has had a chance to read and respond, then I might remove them all if that's okay so I can bring the focus back to my own updates and anything new.

I still like the play button concept but I'm not ruling anything out, in fact it would be nice to have a few different concepts for consideration.
I'd really like a logo that works well with different backgrounds, as well as being suitable for a favicon and video watermark.
I would prefer that new entries aren't just variations on other people's designs. Obviously designers will be drawn to concepts that I've shown a liking for, but at the same time I'm likely to dismiss designs that are too similar to existing entries.
BTW I removed some distracting comments - I trust the people concerned had time to read and respond first. PM me if you're not happy.

In a couple of days I'm holding a voting session to decide the winner. At the moment I'm considering about 16 entries from about 10 designers. All of these will probably be included in the vote, but it seems likely that one of the 4/5-star entries will win.
One factor that was discussed last night was the possibility of animating the logo. I should have thought of this when I did the brief. I'm just letting you know that I'll be imagining various was to animate the logo (e.g. for a video sting) so that may play a part in the decision, albeit a small part.
Apparently the "Remove" button doesn't actually remove comments, it just collapses them. Oh well.

It's down to the last two entrants, so no more entries thanks. Sorry to drag this out but I'm just clarifying a couple of things before I make the final call.
In the meantime I'd like to say what an outstanding contest this has been. I've been blown away by the quality of entries. A couple of weeks ago I wouldn't have dreamed I'd be rejecting logos of such calibre. It breaks my heart to see some of them go.
I'll almost certainly come back for more contests in the future. Thanks again everyone - amazing work!

@Project Dave (contestholder): I feel sorry for "jemarc2004," as he was the first person to introduce play button concept to this contest and his entry is gone. I suggest that you pay him something as a second prize! (99designs.com has that option)

Thanks EmLiam. Sadly my budget is pretty shot but I might have enough left to buy jemarc2004 a nice coffee. I did actually think about consolation prizes for runner-up and noteworthy entries after the contest started. I didn't budget for it this time but I'll probably put a bit aside for this purpose if/when I run the next one.

Pending confirmation of a few details I've declared a winner. Congratulations to claurus. I put some wrap-up feedback in each of the final few entries including the winning one.
Sincere thanks again for everyone's efforts and support during my first contest.
