  6. from being in the prior contest from this contest holder. My understanding is , he is only keeping the contest alive as he awaits comments from the client. I dont think he wants to lead anyone the wrong way as it is not his decision. At least we know they are here..

  13. I am now ArrGee2 because of a stupid ban until the 25th. Perhaps I should have been ArrGee2.0!
I'll probably get banned again for making this comment! (No probs for me, just a change of IP address and email account).

On this ocassion, the CH is obviously not looking at the comments, and just copy-pasting the same reply. What reflection does that have on the CH...not for me to say.

There is a balance that needs to be understood though.

The time between submission and CH feedback. It can take a long time as the CH may be otherwise engaged.

On the other hand, the CH may be waiting for a re-design on a submission.

However, a copy-paste response to all submissions is most certainly disrepectful of effort.

(I'm going to get banned now!)

    Seeyall back as ArrGee 3.0!

  16. here is some more copy and paste reading material for you ArrGee from my 15 other contest ALL won my sitepoint users from around the world.

    -----------------
I have this argument all the time. I do not think it is right to comment on a design. Here is my experience and reasons.

    1. I think it is not fair for me to single out a design OR mislead people into thinking that I am favoring a design.
    2. people will copy it and I will not get very many creative entries.
    3. will make potential contest designers think I have unofficially declared a winner, and why bother entering
    4. it misleads the designer into thinking that all they have to do is keep adjusting it until I like it
    4. it will waste your time
    5. I do not know what I want until I see your winning entry
    6. when you have 50 plus entries, it is not fun making up some BS just to leave a comment, THEN do this everytime you submit a tweak
    7. this is a contest, if you have the best you will win

those are my reasons for putting "looks good" on each one. If I put something else, I may be just trying to help you on future contest OR I really want to know if you created the icon yourself. I am officially saying, "looks good" means that it looks good enough to count as being a submission into this contest. There are 45 entries and there will be ONE winner, lets not waste each others time.

    ----------------------------------------------

We are graphic artists, actually, we HATE designing logos. 99% of all clients come to use already with a logo. Sometimes you get one that needs one, so I tell them upfront.

"We hate designing logos and we do not do them, afterall your logo is everything and defines your company. So rather than you paying us $400.00 and one graphic artist sits there all day designing all these examples that he/she (graphic designer) likes, then giving it to the project manager for them to narrow it down and or send the graphic artist back to the drawing board, then delivering it to you. Only to find that you do not like the 3 or 4 designs we have. Not it starts all over. Which costs us more money than $400.00 is worth. SO, why not have a contest with designers from around the world with diverse backgrounds and experience. We hold the contest for $300.00 and cover the entry fees and you pay us $80.00 on top of it for managing the contest. Which would relate to less than 2 hours of work for us which is near our hourly rate. This way you get the best logo that you deserve and everyone is happy."

So that is what happens. Some clients think, hey why don't we just have a lower prize money, but I try to talk them out of that as I think the $300.00 is the best number for results. So they mostly go for that. As you can see I have had a couple of clients do it for less. Anyways, they all know what is going on and ACTUALLY read all your posts. I am the only one that interacts with you. This makes sure that you are treated fairly and not abused. I used to have contests WAY before sitepoint even existed on other popular forums. Look at this one I did at FlashKit.com, in August of 2001. I think the prize was $2,000.00 for a logo. I was crazy in those days. I had some in 1998, but could not find any, I barely found this as it was and it is not even the original post.

    ------------------------

yes you are correct, "looks good" is not feedback and that is why I did it. I disagree with sitepoint on leaving feedback. I have been doing this a long time and I have had many contest. I find that if I comment on artwork submission in a public arena like this other artist will adopt the styles of the artist that I am commenting postive on. This will affect the outcome of the contest. Additionally, some artist percieve this has a possible winner and will not enter the contest at all thinking I have already chosen a winner. Also, many entries are not suitable to be submissions from a professional graphic artist stand point, but yet these artist must keep entering contest in order to practice and negative feedback will scare them away. I do not need to comment in order for them to learn, they will perfect their artist abilities as they see more artist styles and the characteristics of the entries that seem to win. The most important fact of all is that I do not want to waste an artist time, perfecting an entry knowing that the artist is not going to win. I think it is better to have a contest, view the entries privately and then declare a winner. Currently I think to much time is wasted viewing and commenting on 50 entries and then tweaking them over while being harrased by the contestants wanting a comment on their latest entry. I have the magic formula that will get my client the best logo possible. Have a contest, do not comment on the entry (unless the client sees an entry that he or she must have and needs a correction that I cannot do), award an above average prize and pay immediately after the contest is over. Currently there are 4 artist here that have won my contest in the past. I am a graphic artist as well and I will edit your winning entry for the client if needed. I am sorry, this is my opnion and I stand by it. By the way, the client makes the ultimate decision and does not interact here although they are watching. By the way, the client has already noticed a few entries that he likes very much.

  18. Thank you for your very large explanation and I do agree with you to what your saying, but I do agree with the rest of the designers side. But at the end of the day it's your contest and your way of doing things. I'm glad your client has found some designs they like (I hope it's mine ;D).

I just cannot wait to view which one they have chosen.

  19. Thank you CH, firstly for being a CH. Without you, we would not have a contest.

Secondly, thank you for your offerings on the hard life of being an agent.

However, this is where it falls down. You're an agent. You're a middle-man.

Most importantly, you 'HATE' designing logos whereas, most (IMO) designers here LOVE designing logos.

You hate it because it could be a low blimp on your revenue. We love it because we love it.

As the designers (contestants) have more passion for the design as opposed to revenue, they have far more respect for a CH that has a thorough understanding of requirements.

Would it not be better to get that understanding of requirements and then be able to give a better feedback based upon the clients' wishes?

Please don't get me wrong here, but you are better positioned to give feedback to designers as you are the CH.

Just return efforts where efforts have been paid. Simple.

  31. firstly congrats Geca.
secondly to c3studios rational on contests i could not agree more.
I've seen contests get pretty ridiculous with holders feedback pushing designers
to submit many amends and designs without the understanding of the added time and thinking of the designer's to get his/her design to that stage. Which to me can be a disrespectful misuse of their time and efforts. Sometimes I've looked at a contest and feedback and thought that there's too many designs chewing at this bone and not entered. Lots of feedback is great in the practice of any design but only when the designer doing the work is actually hired to see the project through. Ok the contest holder gets what they wanted but sitepoint(or99designs) does advise giving thought to the amount of time it might take you to design according to the prize and c3studios comments are respectful of this which i commend.

I've often given thought if i where to hold a contest how would I go about it?
My resulting thoughts would very similar to c3studios. if i held a contest for a client of mine and left feedback and rated designs printed them out and showed them to the client they would seemingly pick one I had not initially liked, it happens alot.

maybe the only thing i would add to c3studios might be to leave a comment to any designs that nearly made it or a little bit of info on why the chosen winner was a successful design.
