  9. Guppy, I'd watch it if I were you. Some people might take your "silly" comment to be insulting. I might share similar thoughts about the quality of work I too often see, but I still wouldn't cr@p on people like that...well, not unless they asked me to/asked for it. ;D

  10. Actually, I'd like to expand on that whole concept of "We're leaaaaarning!". This is not addressed to anyone in particular, but it's just a comment.
    --
    --
I don't see what the point is when anyone says that submitting to contests is a process of learning. Learning from who? The contest holders? The CHs aren't the ones you should be learning from; after all, THEY come to US for professional designs for their businesses. Just how much do they know about design? If they knew about logo/corporate identity design, they wouldn't be in need of our services (and this is not counting the designers who come in here to get some cheap, quick work [even though they could probably do it themselves] and then resell it to a client of theirs). The feedback we get is merely suggestions as to their personal tastes. THEY should be trusting US to know what works and what doesn't.
    --
    --
If you -really- need to learn? Read some books/design magazines. Take some design courses. Heck, I'd be glad to give some help (but not w/o payment for my time). You learn from people who know something (even if it's just an inkling) about design. You learn from watching people who do know what they're doing and observing (and I'm talking about the people who don't enter contests; the design firms that put out the logos for the Big Clients). You DON'T -really- learn much from feedback from clients (because of what I stated above). I'm stepping off the soapbox now, LOL...and am going back to the sketchbook for this contest.

  12. Nah, don't retract that comment. I agree with you Intrepid, sometimes going through these designs is the same way as when you get your mail at home. You have to filter out most of the junk mail out and dump it in the trash any way. I'm not crapping on anyone's work, and I certainly don't consider myself to be above the rest. But at the same time I can see where Intrepid is coming from.

  13. to all: regarding on commenting others and asking for feedbacks (dont mean to hurt anyone's feelings), other/future CHs will considering and maybe not taking the contest here since some entrants may little to harsh on their comments. So next time i will (hope you do too) choose my words more carefully and more polite to CHs and other users. Im just thinking of the future and how we (entrants) will bring the site goes (to be the preferable contest site than others) to the future CHs, or not. They're here (CHs) not only looking for the good designs, but also expecting good manners. Its business that tough that we're not always get what we want (we lose some, we win some). CHs pay good money for the good design. Just my two cents :)

  14. No one is talking bad about the CH or designers that have submitted work here. But they're are a bunch of designers on here who are growing a bit impatient waiting for to receive some much needed feedback. Which is completely understandable, I'd be asking what's going on myself as well if I had any work submitted in this contest.

  15. Beg to differ Kinkywizard.....Contest holders do NOT pay good money for what they get. This is an absolute gold mine for anyone wanting artwork done. They get multiple submissions from a lot of talented people for absolutely nothing. And the WINNER is awarded an amount of money lower than what they would have to pay a contrated pro. Everybody here is basically working on "spec" and that is always a risky situation at best. If you scroll up at the above designs,,,,good or bad this would cost multiple thousands of dollars to get if somoene went to 4 or 5 design firms to get these presentations. Don't fret for the "poor" contest holder.....they'll be okay :):)
You also should realize that clients quite often have limited knowledge, imagination, graphic sense and quite often smarts...so the decisions made can be questionable and their methods unprofessional. (just as in a normal contract situation, I might add). They are just business people or sometimes just working schmucks who want services.
Also....as I told one other submitter privately, there are agencies and assorted others using this site and re-selling (brokering) them to their clients. MAKE SURE you are all getting properly paid for your efforts. Anyone here who submits artwork for anything less that $300-$400 is selling themselves short....and hurting themselves in the long run. You have to value your services and when I see something like that "2 logos for 163 bucks" nonsense ....I want to puke
And yes, I know that the HASFL soccer contest that I won was only 150 bucks, but when I first found this site (accidently, actually) I saw this contest and immediately had my idea so decided to see what it was about...Did that one for fun actually. Normally I wouldn't cross the street for 150 bucks.
    Keep smilin kids.....

  16. Someartyguy: Some reasons that CHs going for this site is that they might be have an alternative, for style differences and for less money they would pay, and im truly awared of that :) yeah i know that logo should be more valuable since it brings the value and brand to the company (with pro agencies CHs will pay outrages price, thats why they choose this site as an alternative), so for me, just like you, some contest are for fun and should not making this place to your daily main job (but its anyone's call :)). we dont know the taste of the clients regarding the style we bring, say 50% for our skills and experiences, 50% for luck. and to bring more percentages of skills, we better give them good explanation which is has an education side to our concepts. Some CHs give good feedback, some are not.

wiseguy009: true, its completely understandable. I'm just saying that we (CHs and contestants) should be more be respectful to each other, since this site is a good place (really good place) and we dont want the site turned bad because of our harsh behaviors. Good luck to all :)

  17. Can anyone please report this contest? I think this is a lack of respect from CH. All subjects under discussion here are valid but the focus should be on this particular contest. Why does this happen more everyday that goes by? We must defend ourselves from this kind of attitude, we must learn to enter on the contests a bit later, if CH doesn't see good - or any - entries, thats his loss.

Excuse me, "wiseguy", but by saying that the contest holder should "delete half of the entries just for being silly" sure can be construed as insulting to the designers who've already submitted work. Just which entries is Guppy talking about? And how do YOU know that the entries he's talking about aren't the best that the particular designer can do? Entries may suck/be "silly" to you, but because in some people their perceptual scope for their own work is severely myopic and limited to what they truly believe looks good, you can't really say what's silly/cruddy without treading too close to violating SitePoint rules regarding proper behavior towards your fellows here (unless they actually ask for your critique). Christ, it's hard to find honesty anywhere, even on critiquing sites, but here on SitePoint you have to refrain from judgement (unless you see thievery/some blatant rule breaking).

    --
(Aside: Hey, if anyone wants honest critique gimme a PM, but don't go crying to mamma about how big ol' Tropicandrew was mean to you, LOL.)

P.S. I don't think not leaving feedback is a reportable offense...is it? If it isn't, it should be. I hate to see days go by without feedback and oops, all of a sudden the contest is suspended. :(

  19. Isn't it amazing the fire a little bit of truth can start? I'm not knocking designers. Some just shouldn't be submitting in certain contests...in that, I'd include myself. I could hack away at a website template idea but in the end, I will likely (at this time) give a product lacking in value for dollar.

Arpad - if 'we' (which we are we talking about) all submitted late entries then no one would be able to conduct contests :) That'd be funny to watch actually.

Stop disecting things down and breaking them apart into things no one here in the first place spoke of. Your reading to much into these comments and assuming everything. Geez! And it's true, no one is getting picked on here, at least not directly no names were mentioned. It's merely a suggestion/comment that Intrepid made, and I think I have the right to agree or disagree with that without having someone hassle me for it. Your entitled to your opinion just as much as I'm entitled to mine. So let's just agree to disagree and drop it already. Sounds good?

  25. On sat., nov.3, kinky wizard said:"true, its completely understandable. I'm just saying that we (CHs and contestants) should be more be respectful to each other, since this site is a good place (really good place) and we dont want the site turned bad because of our harsh behaviors."

too true, kinkywizard. It seems like lately one out 3 contests actually picks a winner (if that many)! I agree that we are all feeling the frustrations that abandonment tends to bring. and I agree with most of the stuff all of you have said. but what I have really noticed is that lately there have been way more negative than positive comments written in these discussion areas.some of them really vicious! CH's read these also. and too often, the comments sound like bratty little kids fighting over toys. not so much right here. But nrowse thru the other contests & pull up the ones with lots of comments. you'll see exactly what I'm talking about. I think that all our "Comments" could easily be scaring off the CH's. why would they want to deal with a bunch of designers that seem to do nothing but whine & complain all the time. You'd be surprised at how many of these abandoned contests seem to have become abandoned just after these types of comments have posted.
just a thought, guys. could be that we are complaining about we might actually be helping to create.

  26. You pour your heart and soul into a design. You follow the brief exactly. You wait patiently for some feedback. Ah! The email comes. Feedback on your design!

"Sorry, this is not what we are looking for at all."

    Excuse me?

You read feedback on another design, the CH now wants something total different from the original brief?

You try again. You get grayed out without any feedback this time.

It`s hard work for nothing. Waiting for a tidbit of feedback to be tossed at you like a starving dog. We`re all punishing ourselves but keep coming back for more LOL. Of course there will be bad behavior, we are all competing to please the CH the most and in the end we know there will be only one winner, and no guarantee of that even because they don`t even have to pick a winner.

  30. I can see all sides of everyones opinion, but the "silly" designers on here are just trying! Sorry that there not as great as you, or your ideas but its not like there physically hurting you in anyway! Give them some credit for trying! I think this website is great, whether the pay is low, horrible, not enough or whatever you want to say, its not about the money! Its about getting your work out there, and puting a good reputation for yourself. So then they will reccomend you to other people and eventually your work will turn into 150 per logo to 1000 per logo! I think its unfair to knock anyone down on this site, no one will want to hire a big baby to design there stuff, even if its the best/worst design!

  39. 1.Why should the CH give feedback for entries he is not interested in?He can just eliminate them! He is not the tutor here. It would only be a waste of time for him to furnish polite rejection as feedback and it doesn't help the entrant any. 2. Also how it hurts anybody if some other guy posts an entry, not rated good according to him? Anyone who posts something thinks it is his best for the contest. and 3. @ Tropicandrew...,ever heard of 'learning by making mistakes'...and 'practice makes perfect'.Thanq guys.

  40. 1) At least he/she shows your design has been considered - it's called courtesy. I'd reather have polite rejection that being ignored - it's like having a one-way conversation. 2) I think I know what you're talking about but not enough to say anything - must be my english 3) Some people make so many mistakes they'll never learn. Some people have a kernel of talent to start with. THOSE people can learn from mistakes and a noticable improvement can be seen over a short time. Some people will pretty much never be good enough to compete no matter how much practice you get...that's a fact not an opinion.

If some people cannot learn by making mistakes or by practice,as you say,-which I beg to differ-, still it is very much within their rights to post an entry. You cannot deny existance to the graphically/artistically-challenged.lol.It is only courteous to be empathatic, particularly when you too would rather have a polite rejection than be ignored.Cheers :-)

  45. Hi Outland,
You have to go to each individual entry to write your feedback, and you also have to be signed in to be able to do it. :-)

  46. I am logged in, but can't leave feedback. I'll give stars out of 5. Sorry to those of you that want more feedback. Send me personal emails or something if you really want extra feedback. Thanks to all !

  47. Ok, have given stars to all contestants so far. I understand from all the comments that I've upset some of you by not giving comments. Have tried to rectify this a little bit today. For the record, this is my first time on this website and I wasn't familiar with all the rules++ and didn't mean to upset anybody. There are some amazing ideas and designs and it's going to be hard to choose. We might wawrd more than one entry the winning $500.

  49. Dear contest holder, mean Outland..i have just popped in this (and other course) contest..actually i did it very accidently..so if´s just possible to give u any advice..i´ve studied some dodgy arty lessons..:)))we could say verrrry gooood onnes..so then i would prefer that logos and also bags design from girl or guy(i need to see it again, cause the right name)called throw74, are very nice at least..they look quiet different, i mean the process, than others... and i would like to say i love it...cause it realy is, how the artist says... i know what´s going to follow might be different oppinions, but whatever ....everybody learns...so either i can do.... xxx at all...

Reading his comments was like reading my high school physics book again... at least that had pictures though.
