    fit in a 250X250 banner spot too, can easily be replaced with expandible content, everything is designed be repeatable. the two different font sizes for "new stories" and "updated journals" are for comparison sakes.

    Regarding design #6

    Hi. I think you're using too many colors. One for text (back / gray), one for links and maybe one for headers should be enough.

    Font size: "updated journals" font sizes definitely look better.

    You can make the whole layout a bit wider and you'll have more space for the login form so it doesn't look like it's floating around.

    Menu is a bit plain... some background color could make it better, I'm not sure.
