Brief Summary

Coded site design required for Debt Management Company Website. Design should be professional but non-intimidating, informal and friendly. As it is such a grim subject for the debtors themselves the design needs to giv e them a bit of a lift.

  4. For uncoded, the main thing I need is the design of the home page. I envisage all pages of the site will share a common design so the design of the home page should be enough. However if the design of the home page is vastly different to a content page then I would need the design of the home page plus one content page.

    Hope that makes things clear

  6. Just a small edit to the brief. The client would like to include a free phone number somewhere in the top section of the site that should be included on all pages. Most likely place for this is in the header section.

I do not know the exact phone number yet but just use the following for now.

"Call our experts free on 0800 970 7724"

Basically the same idea as can be seen on these 2 sites:
    http://www.debtadvisorycentre.co.uk/debt-management/

  15. Please note!

A few designs have used photos of switchboard operator people. The company this site is for is a small consultancy company so the idea of having a team of people waiting to answer the telephone is not really appropriate.

For images, I would prefer images of individuals looking pleased / happy / relieved that their debt problems have been solved and / or some corporate looking people who are also pleased / happy / relieved that their business debt problems have been solved.

  19. Thanks to everyone for great design work!

I have chosen (well the client has chosen) the design by Henry187. So once he has coded up the site I will pay him his winnings.

Looking forward to the next contest!

  20. Out of sheer honesty and absolutely no jealousy the winning design has absolutely no aesthetic value to it. It's bland, boring, the colors are muted and only add to that. Stock photos are probably freely downloadable over the net and seem slapped in the header. You can get a design slightly better than that for $50 at other places. I truly am horrified when I load the design on my screen. Judging by the quality of work, I can also guarantee you that he probably knows nothing about coding either and will probably have tables all over the html.

But oh well, the choice is made, if the client wants to not attract customers and less market and simply a website for existing clients then he or she's chosen fine. Congratulations Henry187! You can now safely say you've experienced a miracle.

  21. Thanks, Tenub?

I knew that someone would have something against it, so I might as well discuss it as best I can.

The design in simple and bland because that's what the client was looking for. The example sites were very bland, but it was what the client said they wanted it to look like. This isn't the only contest I've won, and yes, I have several years of coding experience in (x)HTML, CSS, PHP, Flash (animating, and coding in ActionScript 1.0, and 2.0), and MySQL.

The photographs in the submitted designs aren't being used because yes, they were just "dummy" images to see how it'd look. I'm replacing them with photos from iStockPhotos, which I should've just done in the first place. Again, the placement of them was on purpose to try and keep it simple.

If I wanted the design to look "classy", and visually stunning, I could. Take this design that I made for example: http://zeldadimension.net/images/henry/layouts/3.jpg

However, I lost in that contest, not because of looks, but because of how/where everything was laid out. So this time, I tried to do the opposite.

    But thanks.

  22. Just to add my 2 cents. Henry187 has done a great job and worked closely to the brief, so much so that the client has chosen his design as the winner.

I do not have any knowledge of your prior work Tenub but I would imagine you will have trouble in this industry if you do not follow the brief from the client. The client is always right - even if you do not agree with their decisions. They are after all the person who is going to pay for the work.

I think it is not very competitive or good natured of you to be so rude to one of your fellow competitors.

The photos were indeed temporary photos - I wouldn't expect a designer to spend money on photos for a contest they may not win. I have now however purchased suitable photos which I have supplied to him.

And regarding his coding, I am sure he will do a fabulous job without using tables. I will certainly look forward to working with him again for his professional attitude and workmanship.

It was definitely not a miracle! I was good work following a brief.

  23. Congratulations Henry187! A super hard worker! :)

    Tenub (Josepth),

i think that your message is very offensive. Please, calm down. Clients are clients and you will learn. If your design was not selected it´s a matter of taste. I received 2 Private Messages from other Contest Holders inviting me to design and another one askin for a quote for a job. Excellent. But this client (NOT the contest Holder) thinks my template is flashy. What can i do? Laugh! Try to extract the good part of life. This is not a war, it´s a game. It´s really fun and i can´t feel offended or blame the Contest Holder´s client. If you can´t understand this, just leave Sitepoint Contests, because you will hurt yourself a lot. Otherwise you are doing a good job and you will win next time.

    Paul,

thank you a lot for your feedback and good words. I really appreciate your honesty. I will probably have more luck next time.

    Thanks again,

    Henry.

  24. Thanks, Unique, I appreciate it. =) In all honesty, I was very worried when I saw your design. Graphically, and in uniqueness, it was very good - even when put into a more simplified form (your last design).

Tenub, this particular contest was one where you had to make the layout more subtle, and focus more on delivering the content. That's where I normally fail, since I usually strive for the best look visually, and then have no ideas when it comes to the content. This time, I was lucky, and got what the client was looking for.

  25. Sorry I sound like an asshole but that's how I am. And I don't see anywhere in my earlier response where you could get the idea that I was "angry" or "worked up" about losing. I was simply pointing out how your entry defied the concept of the word design.

PS: Next time don't put any example up unless it is indeed "visually stunning." Your entry to this contest actually looks better than *straining to read the logo font...* Inu... No, I give up because you've managed to make a logo that's illegible.

  27. When in reality your comment just shows your ignorance. Did you even care to read my sentences and understand them fully?

I was bashing design in the critique section before I even entered my first contest. Please don't post with the crowd just to seem like the "good guy"...it makes you look foolish.

I'm not posting here anymore, it's just a waste of my time.

That says it all really. Maybe instead of criticising others you should concentrate on your own work. And no, I'm not trying to seem like the 'good guy', I just get annoyed when people criticise fellow designers work. I've been a victim of it myself on here, thankfully I'm pretty thick skinned and it didn't bother me, but it still isn't right.

  30. However you design things or how good a coder you are, the bottom line is Clients get what they want, it maybe a poor brief or it may be a poor choice for some, but designing for a client is relative, what maybe good to your eyes may not be good with others and vice-versa. Most important is they get what they want. Congrats to the winner, and thanks for the opportunity.
