Hey SiMar,
I really appreciate your input here. Long winded, indeed, but you brought up a lot of really great points that I'll take into consideration while perusing the contest list for projects to come.
I certainly didn't mean to ruffle any feathers with my comments here. I genuinely thought the CH's earlier comment was pretty ridiculous (because I do feel that a great design can come in at any point of a competition) - but your post makes a lot of great arguments for submitting early from the designers perspective, and for ending a contest early if THE ONE has been found.
Having stumbled across this contest with 6 or so hours remaining, and an almost week old "SiMar is leading the way here", it didn't seem like he had quite made a decision yet so I thought I'd take a stab at this one. Being the "illustrator noob" that I am (I've been designing sites for a while, new to logos/this site/illustrator though), it took me almost the entire 6 hours to come up with something that I wouldn't be completely embarrassed to submit, lol - and just as I was finishing up - I noticed the contest had been pulled early.
So sure, I was a little frustrated that I didn't get it in on time - but "sore loser"? C'mon now. I thought that was a pretty obnoxious thing for the CH to say, but I figured it was probably just the first thing that rolled off his fingers after he read what I had said - and since I'm here to learn/design, not pick petty arguments with CH's, I'm cool with just letting it be.
I'll tuck this logo away in the lessons_learned folder and focus on the work to come.
BTW, the following comment...
"but I suppose if you're happy with the winning design - that's all that really matters. Congrats Simar!"
... was said with absolute sincerity.
My apologies to both of you if you read it as a sarcastic jab at the design/choice, because it certainly wasn't.
Thanks again for the insight SiMar.
Cheers,
Don.

Just to add to your comment Don (while not wanting to drag this on). I personally feel that a designer should enter a contest in its early stages while ideas are still fresh to be aired rather than at the last minute. That way you can take the time to amend your submissions if necessary in good time, fine tuning them hopefully so they are exactly what the contest holder is after. These contests not only take up a fair amount of time for designers but contest holders also and for busy CH's with a business to run also I am sure they would rather get the contest nailed in good time rather than drag it out further. Likewise with most designers. Personally Ive never seen a contest holder extend a contest for the sake of a designers logo amendments - Only if the CH is not fully satisfied with the outcome of the various logo posts to date or even if there has been an outstanding number of fantastic designs. Additionally if a contest holder sees a logo that hits the mark straight away and if it is how they envisioned exactly how their logo would look in their own mind then there is nothing at all wrong with ending a contest prematurely. I have seen all so often a logo posted early that has received top marks (5 stars) with a glowing review on top only for the contest to have been dragged out the full course. Its has been plain to see that the logo was a winner in the CHs mind even at the early stage, and how many designers waste their time entering then?
Additionally adding logos last minute can be frustrating to designers who have spent a great deal of time and effort in producing and amending logos only for some last minute wonder to post one up resembling your own...and ending up winning! This is rare but it does happen.
Anyway as already said, from my experience the logos that win contests mostly are the ones posted in good time while the creative ideas are still fresh and when the CH can develop their own ideas or plan of action. Just my 2 cents...although a bit long winded granted!
This Contest holder has been great throughout, plenty of good feedback and suggestions to all, other designers were given a good chance and produced some great designs and the contest was only ended 1 or 2 hours early anyway

P.S. I'd be happy to send you a link to my design for a critique if you're up for it. I spent some time on it - it'd probably feel like less time wasted if at least one other person took a look at it, lol.
Cheers.

I'm not being a sore loser, lol, nor am I saying I would've been able to win had I gotten my submission in on time.
All I'm saying is...
There are many designers here that will spot a contest they'd like to enter when there's only a day or a few hours remaining - they'll pour over your brief and comments and bust their @ss to put something together on time.
When you pull the plug on a contest hours before it's scheduled to end - there is almost always going to be work that never gets seen, which is lose-lose for everyone involved imo. Regarding the "not having time to make edits etc.." - if you see something you like that comes in late, you can always extend the contest so folks have time to work in your suggestions.
Maybe it was ME and my sad excuse for a portfolio that missed your early cut off this time (I'm still learning - I don't mind the criticism) - but it could have just as easily been SiMar, or someone better.
Just food for thought for your next contest.

Don - stop being a sore loser
Anyone who enters a design in the last hour - do you really think your gonna have time to make amends?
anyways, looking at your portfolio - i dont think you could match the skill from si and jpan

"no one who enters a competition in the last hour is ever going to win"
That's probably one of the most ridiculous statements I've seen from a CH on this site - but I suppose if you're happy with the winning design - that's all that really matters.
Congrats Simar!

That's what happens when you leave it till' too late - no one who enters a competition in the last hour is ever going to win. If I see an entry in the last hour and then I give feedback, I don't think you can submit another entry.
That's what happens when you leave things till' last bro

SiMar wins
The quality of all his logo's were excellent. Listened to the feedback I wrote and improved just as I had asked and he hit the concept right on the head. Also gave variations of the logo's on different coloured background. Well worthy of being the winner.
Jpan was second. Jpan, your IRELAND word came out great but you couldn't make the word SEEK complement the word IRELAND or the styling of it. Also, yours looked great on green background but lost it's touch on white, making it not as adaptable as needed. But still a good effort.
