Brief Summary

SCIway.net is an acronym for the South Carolina Information Highway, but our name can be confusing. We want people who visit our site to understand immediately that this is their resource for everything SC!

The look of the logo needs to be dynamic and elegant. We are looking for designs that are professional and sophisticated.

In general, none of these designs are quite as sophisticated as what we are looking for. The closest one to what we would like is the entry #1 from jbmclemore. Since our site looks relatively simple, our logo really needs to have some life in it with color gradients. An elegant logo is what we are looking for.

2 CONTEST HOLDER, - the dots were taken from the high way map, the lines are kinda highways, was it so difficult?

Yes, I figured that the lines were highways, however per brief we mentioned that we didn't want any allusion to highways. Thanks for the submit though :)

In general, we are looking at mcash#15 and jbmclemore#2 as strong entries. mcash#15's "SC" font is too playful, but the idea of a watermark logo symbol is a good one.
jbmclemore#2 has great dynamic fonts that look sharp and professional. Having a white background with contrasting color font would be better though. We want to move away from the boxy feel that a background color has, since our logo fits in a white space on our example page: http://www.sciway.net/sciway-logo-design.html

Thanks to everyone for their submission and enjoy a great weekend. We'll be back to giving feedback on Monday, we look forward to new entries :)

As of Monday noon, while we have a few entries (the non-shaded ones) that are in the general direction of what we are looking for, we are still not satisfied with any of them enough to be able to declare a winner. As of now, we would not use any of these logos on our site. We believe our brief clearly states that we are looking for an elegant and upscale logo, something we would be proud of displaying on our thousands of pages.
Even though we are about South Carolina, we are not a vacation/beach site so please use colors, styles and fonts that would be more appropriate for a reference website than a travel website.
We look forward to new entries and give prompt feedback.
Thanks to everyone so far who has taken the time to send in an entry.

You may want to rethink the wording 'elegant and upscale', because the way you're going is neither elegant nor upscale.

    I AGREE!, iheartpixels.

You use a bold professional looking font and its not elegant enough. You use a more elegant upscale font and its not professional enough. So what do you do?

A logo does not rely entirely on the font. Ideally, a strong logo is a combination of a suitable font with a literal or figurative symbol of some sort. It has to be more than simply text.

I agree with the contest holder on this one. A typeface doesn't make a logo, it's the whole package. Elegance isn't measured in how many swashes a font has. I think (at least in my interpretation) that the "elegance" SCIway is looking for is a timeless look, moreso than something that can be printed on a doily.

that's true, logos dont rely solely on the font, but look at all of the big corporations - most of the logos are simply text and nothing else.

I wasn't even talking about the font choice, the logos that are being considered for the final are not elegant or upscale in any way, shape, or form.

I think people should quit whining if a logo is elegant or upscale. Everybody has a different opinion on what is elegant and upscale and we should leave it at that.

The Contest Holder is the final word on everything, it will be their logo... So, people, stop whining that your logos were eliminated, you might think that your logo is awesome, but that is because you made it, step back and actually look at it.

My entries were eliminated, but that is just fine. I can understand where the Contest Holder is coming from, especially cause my feedback was not very cryptic. Whining will not help you win a contest... If you can't deal with it, then you really should not be doing contests; or any such work if you cant accept the fact that: "The customer is always right."

I think some of us just needed clarification on the area or level of upscale and elegance that the customer was seeking. Yes, the customer is always right, and we are here to try to find and create an idea/concept that the customer has envisioned and without detailed directional feedback that can be difficult to do sometimes.
No complaints here, just confused at first.

I just believe that if you want feedback, ask it in a constructive manner.
As the DESIGNER RULES: Negative comments or criticism of the contest holder, the way in which the contest is conducted, or any other entrants, are strictly not allowed. If you require clarification about a detail of a contest or feedback on your design, you should ask it in a constructive manner.

Telling the contest holder that he is wrong in his choosing does not follow guidelines... However, that is mostly iheartpixels

    Question for contest holder-

I don't know if this has already been explained or not, but what I'd like to know is why is it that on your preview page for the logo does it say that the winner will be given $500 if entry is chosen, but on here you or only offering $300? Could you clarify?

We would like to see an icon integrated with the text. A lot of people have used the palm tree and moon idea and that is good because that's something most South Carolinians really identify with. However, we need to have our own unique version of the state flag symbol, it cannot just be a clipart pasted on next to some nice fonts.
    Thanks for the question.

The reason why this contest was suspended is that amgraham entered an entry, then subsequently removed it, not allowing us to give him/her feedback. We've contacted this person and sitepoint support. Most terrible timing since our contest was about to end (with 3 hours left).
