- Brief Summary
-
I'm looking for more than just a logo, I'm looking to cultivate a brand and brand image. In addition to displaying the name of my business on the logo, I'm looking for an image that can be a stand alone as well that will bring brand awareness on its own.
We need an icon/image like the nike swish or pepsi ball that will be instantly recognizable. - Actions

I'm not defending the use of clip art, by any stretch of the imagination. Clip art gets used here for a few reasons... quickly throwing together something without investing all that much time and effort (an error on the part of designers) is one. That has a lot to do with what you are talking about. And it isn't right. But you mention doing a google search to find images, and that is what I am talking about. The expectations of many business owners are based very often what they see doing exactly that. That has nothing to do with the amount of money you have for marketing but rather doing something original and being consistent in your use of it.

First and foremost according to 99designs rules...the person who uses cliparts is liable for a permanent ban from the site...we are supposed to get creative here...otherwise any school kid with decent photoshop skills could trace or use cliparts to create logos...this is a place for professional designers to meet clients to satisfy their needs...
Also andrewstacy, not everyone has got the kind of funds that a pepsi or a nike or a cingular has to spend in marketing saying the tick mark or the ball means nike or pepsi...
most of them operaqte with limited resources...that is the very reason for the site being there...we provide excellent design services for a very nominal fee...in real life scenario an agency would easily charge close to $4000 to create a good brand identity!
When they say i want to depict a martial art symbolism, doesn't mean that one is allowed to use cliparts from google search...
it means that we should get creative in depicting what the client wants...
there are a million ways to express the same concept...needn't be the same image flicked from a google search...
When a person is really not capable of delivering that, he doesn't deserve to be here.

You just have to be careful with rights issues when using clip art. Just because you can download it for free doesn't transfer the rights to you. Anyone using clipart should be able to give the CH proof of rights, so they don't get in trouble for using artwork that is copyrighted by someone else.

(I'm sure this will be interpreted as sour grapes, but anyway...)
You can't just blame the designers for the amount of clip art. The contest holders, in general, want something that represents their product, not simply a graphic shorthand for their company name. What does the pepsi ball have to do with soft drinks? What does the nike swish have to do with shoes? We already know what Pepsi and Nike make, we just want a quick way of identifying that particular company's products. Their name is already synonymous with what they make.
Despite what most business owners say, their preference is for a design that says "this is a martial arts place" and not "this is ACMA, which I happen to know already is a martial arts place".
