FYI, This CH had already held a contest in which a winner was not declared. Here's the link http://www.sitepoint.com/marketplace/contest/1266 So designers beware! Thank you.

Winger,
The contest you speak of was abandoned as the company went through some unexpected change and legal issues, hence the fact I am now starting out as a freelance web developer.
I tried to comment on the contest to explain this but by the time I had time to do so the contest had been suspended and I wasn't able to add any comments explaining this.

Yeah and someone at SP told me that CHs who don't declare a winner are automatically barred by the system which is completely true as I see that now.

Ok,
My last contest was abandoned as the company for which it was for ended up dispanding due to a falling out of the directors as to the direction of the company, hence the fact I am now advertising as a freelance web developer.
I have sent a mail to the Site Point administrator advising them of this and asked if I could add a comment to the contest explaining this but I haven't heard anything back, this probably explains why I haven't been barred as I didn't just leave it without explanation.
Surely if I was going to do things like that I would just sign up with a different username? I am not trying to diddle anyone here. If you check the url of the previous contest - www.doyouneedglasses.co.uk you will see that there is no site there and I have not stolen any logo designs from the entrants.
If you want to discuss these things with me then why not private message me to see if I would explain things before implying that I am unreliable and a scammer. These comments may well have affected the entrants I get, meaning I will have wasted my money.
Shall we have a contest or do you want to contribute to the cost of this listing and continue a public flogging of myself? People have a right to know my history with contests? I have only ever held 1 contest, do not imply that continually abandon contests!!

Oh come on. Don't cry about the entry fee you might lose when you received alot of FREE work from people in the contest you didn't award a prize for.
I am so sick of contest holders blaming third-parties for contests falling apart. YOU started the contest, and it's YOUR responsibility to see it through. No one here owes you anything, and you owe someone from that last contest a prize.

Your first contest was abandoned.. that's even worse. Well we're not actually trying to mess things up here.. but people here do have the right to know the history of your contests. They are not here to waste their time on winner-less contests. If something happens with the company we are not responsible for that. Atleast you could've mentioned that in the discussion section of the last contest, which you didn't.
And what's the point of PMing you? Like PMing you and telling you that your last contest was abandoned which you never knew..? What's the point?
Yeah as you said you could've easily signed up for a new ID and start a new contest, That's what we designers have been telling sitepoint all the time, to prevent this.
If you were a responsible CH you would've PMed me with the reason for which your last contest was abandoned when I first made a post about it instead of deleting it right away which explains things.

HELIX - I never blamed a 3rd party for the company falling apart. I was 1 of the directors but at the end of the day you cannot continue in a company that is simply not going to work. How did I receive any FREE work? I have no psd files of the work, no eps files, the site this was for has no design and the no logo has been used/copied or reproduced in anyway. So tell me, at what point have I actually received anything? What if I had thought that none of the logo's were what I wanted or good enough? Should I still declare a winner so as not to upset anyone? I don't owe anyone a prize as I am not using anyone's work. If you submit a design to a customer and it is rejected do you still expect your customer to pay you even though you are not providing anything?
As I said, I tried to add a comment on the contest board but it was closed for comments? I have only been in a position to start spending time going through this again recently, by which time it was too late to add any comments. As it goes I was in the process of sending people private messages to people who entered the contest to explain and invite them to enter this contest.

It's called spec work. Ideas have value, and you received many of them for free. People spent alot of time on their designs, and you decided not to compensate anyone for their time by issuing the prize.
And yes, if the work is good enough quality, you should always declare a winner. If you receive enough entries, the work quality is there, and DESPITE WHAT MIGHT BE HAPPENING BEHIND THE SCENES, it is your responsibility to declare a winner. It's the right thing to do.
But obviously, you know nothing about that sort of thing.

I disagree that just because there are entries you have to declare a winner. If I put out to tender to 10 different companies and noe of them meet my needs I would not offer them the contract/job - contests are no different. Do not assume that quantity implies quality!
I know plenty about doing the right thing thanks very much - do not judge me as a person when you know nothing about me.
You cannot pay for something if the company no longer exists and there is no bank account!

You cannot say that you were dis-satisfied with the entries in the contest.
Quoted from the other contest:
Thank you for all the entries.I shall now take a day or 2 to decide upon a winner. I will also give feedback to each entry over the next couple of days.
Please be patient while I select a winner, there are a lot of very good entries and I do not envisage it being an easy decision.
Thanks again to all

When you do not envisage it being an easy decision, you cannot say this: I disagree that just because there are entries you have to declare a winner.
kirkdx : I don't owe anyone a prize as I am not using anyone's work.
Well you did use their time and you said that there were some good entries which proves your above statement wrong.
And the comments section was closed.. ok fine then you could've just added a line in the current contest's description say, " The last contest was abandoned due to this. This contest will have a winner for sure. "- User

I never said I was dis-satisfied with the entries - I was merely using it as an example against you must always pay, no matter what as Helix7 suggested.
If the company still existed and there was a bank account to pay someone from then I would still use a logo from that contest, but there isn't and I am not allowed to use the name Do You Need Glasses

"Ok,

Is that not a comment explaining why?
As I said, paying someone in a contest for their time implies that anyone who has spent time on creating a good entry should be paid. The contest format would not survive like this. All these comments have continued as Helix7 has decided that I am responsible for giving this site a bad name (which I didn't realise it had) and that I am a lying, scumbag deadbeat who is only out to scam people.
Thanks to him this contest is effectively dead as I can't imagine anyone entering it now with these comments attached to it implying that I constantly go around abandoning contests, which I do not.

As I said, if anyone had asked I would have been happy to explain - the fact that this contest is, in business terms, no way related to the previous 1 was the reason I didn't mention it.

"in business terms"
This contest is in no way related to the business of the other contest. What I mean by that is I didn't abandon the other contest and then create a new one for the same business.
Perhaps a new user ID would have been the easiest option, but I didn't realise just how despised I had become, plus I didn't feel I had to hide anything.
Apparently it is more than acceptable on Site Point to send people abusive private messages, calling them names, taking delight in the fact that their company failed causing them great financial loss and loss of a good friend (I am no longer on speaking terms with the other director). Had I realised the kind of site this is I would have found others to get the work done.

"in business terms" doesn't matter here because according to SP not only 'Holding a contest and not declaring a winner, starting a new contest for the same company' is unacceptable but also ' Not announcing a winner in any of your ex-contests or not attributing a valid reason for it '
Recently there was this contest with 100+ entries and many of 'em were good which he said, finally the CH said he wouldn't declare a winner because none of the designs were upto his expectations. That's fair because he had declared it publicly and unfortunately you didn't do anything like that which has caused this. I'm sorry for the bad time you had with the other company, but we aren't doing anything wrong here I think.- User

Hello all,
FYI, I removed all inappropriate comments. Contest Holder clearly explained what happened with his last contest and there is no reason for attacking him more. Entrants have a choice to believe him or not and to enter his new contest or not, so please do not attack CH and consider this comment as a general warning to you all.
I'm sure most of you are aware that attacking each other publicly is strictly against SitePoint guidelines.
Kind regards,

Hi LogoB,
No news other than the fact that we are waiting for the deadline in case anyone has entries they are working on. It wouldn't be fair to prevent them from entering by shortening the contest.
